Why do people fall for the religion meme? Its such an obvious string of lies
>inb4 troll
>>767548193
Because they were raised with it as a child. It's hard to question something when it's the center of how you understand the world.
>>767548193
Reassurance that you're ok, that you can find meaning in your life, and a feeling of belonging are fantastic.

>>767548193
As of today, mostly it's indoctrinated into people. But sometimes those kids break out of it.
Sometimes someone gets dealt a really shitty hand and needs something to cope with, and turns to it.
Those are the two most prominent sources I've noticed.
>>767548193
What are you talking about? Op is a fag.
>>767548911
How do you even make sense of it?

Yeah pretty much this. People, parents and culture make it much, much easier to believe it than to not, and its a very pleasant lie.
The truth is unknown, scary and uncertain. The weak, the stubborn, the unquestioning, the stupid, the unchanging, the ignorant and the arrogant, just to name a few, will cling to it and not let go.
That encapsulates most people.
I thought that was fairly obvious..?

>The weak, the stubborn, the unquestioning, the stupid, the unchanging, the ignorant and the arrogant, just to name a few, will cling to it and not let go.
Frankly, most of my christian friends are better than my non-christian friends. I feel faith really helps you out in life. But i guess that might depend wildly on particular church.
>>767550079
>Frankly, most of my christian friends are better than my non-christian friends.
how many of them want to restrict the freedoms of others based on their faith?
>>767550079
Define "Better"
Also, you have the moral quandry of
>Are they being good because they believe it is right or because of the cosmic space zombie santa clause watching their every move?
I find that the best people are those that are moral for no other reason than morality's sake.
>>767550079
"Better" doesnt make what they believe any more true.
>>767550755
Some probably do, but no more than non-religious people want to restrict freedoms of others based on their non-religious opinions.
>>767551029
>Define "Better"
Better both is "more moral" and "more successful". Of course, my opinion of them might be flawed.
>Are they being good because they believe it is right or because of the cosmic space zombie santa clause watching their every move?
That's really good question and i can't speak for them. I THINK they like Jesus and want to make him happy by following his teachings. Their motivation is positive, rather than negative (avoiding punishment).
>>767551441
Maybe not. I just wanted to defend them from previous Anon, who accused them of being "weak, the stubborn, the unquestioning, the stupid, the unchanging, the ignorant and the arrogant".
>>767551455
>but no more than non-religious people want to restrict freedoms of others based on their non-religious opinions.
sure, thats why so many secular countries kill gays eh
Because it's not the truth that smart and mature people care about, it's the effects of systems in place regardless of their truths.
You're obv going through an edgy phase where "the truth" is all that matters to you, but you should be able to see that 1: it's impossible to know the truth and 2: most churches do very very good things for society and developing nations
Wait, and lemme guess, you're so romantically involved with pornography that you think marriage isn't one of the driving forces of progress in society. "Women are whores" is some philosophy you live by to justify never letting anyone get close to you.
And wait wait wait, hold on- one more question
DO YOU EVEN FUCKING LIFT YOU FUCKING WEEABOO PONY JERKING FAG MONKEY. GO THE FUCK OUTSIDE AND GET YOUR GODDAMN PRIORITIES IN ORDER.
>>767548193
Why do people fall for the everything came from nothing and somehow randomly generated complex lifeforms, ecosystems, and solarsystems meme?
>>767551795
America and Poorope could see the benefit of gay marriage and how that could progress their societies as far as getting family numbers back up

>>767551833
I bet you're popular at parties.
>>767551577
They are, by definition unquestioning. I don't know who said it but somewhere in my life I heard someone say
>Your strongest held beliefs are the ones you should put under the highest scrutiny
and it really stuck with me.
In the very least they are not truly questioning and thinking deeply about why they believe the things that they do.
>>767551455
>Better both is "more moral" and "more successful". Of course, my opinion of them might be flawed.
I suspect that maybe some confirmation bias, a smaller pool of friends that are atheist/agnostic, etc.
I could be wrong though.
You need more secular friends then my dude. People that are that way because they think deeply about the things they believe and the world around them. These people are often as moral, or more, than most religious people I know, and almost always more intelligent (which usually leads to success as THAT person defines it).
athiests/agnostics that are that way because its cool, or are just devoid of any belief system or deep thought are not a fair comparison, and I wouldn't really include in that group if I had a choice.
>>767551577
Also, It was not an "and" list, it was an "at least one of these" list.
I could continue it if you like.
Religion throws its net pretty wide with the people that it attracts and retains, thats why it will always remain widespread.
>>767553246
>They are, by definition unquestioning
You know nothing what they do and not question.
>athiests/agnostics that are that way because its cool, or are just devoid of any belief system or deep thought are not a fair comparison
Fair point.

>>767553499
>You know nothing what they do and not question
Fair enough, but I know the mindset enough to say that this is probably true.
Let me explain.
To truly questioning something, you must start with the initial assertion that it is false, or in the very least, not necessarily true. I mean REALLY believe that.
>This is where most religiousfags fail, this is something they cannot REALLY do. They can imitate it, set up strawmen to destroy or whatever, but most will not put aside preconceived notions.
Next you have to really tear it apart, You want to look for everything that could make it false. You don't look for supporting evidence in an effort to shut down your confirmation bias.
I've missed the first step though.
You have to make sure that what you are trying to prove or disprove is falsifiable.
>religion is not.
so religiousfags will just default to, okay I'll believe it then.
We do not, because that is foolish.
When in doubt, do not take the intellectually easy way out.
please see image for a related unfalsifiable claim.
