The political state of those areas has pushed people towards a more extreme viewpoint. That and people turning towards extremism of religion because they don't feel as if they have any other identity in the society they now find themselves in.
Most of those people are just running with the crowd, and holy shit is it a bad crowd to run with but that's how society goes when things go to shit.
