As someone who does engineering models as an independent contractor, I can say it is way harder to screw up scale on a model when you are dealing in fractions of a inch, or in inches. In the metric system your guide markers are the same whether your scaled to mm, cm, or meters,

A lot of the context for why the two systems exist has been lost or forgotten, so let me explain.
Metric is AMAZING for working with scientific measurements, and cataloging data that we find-especially for things like chemistry.
SI was developed with navigation in mind, as miles and nautical miles are based off of the longitude lines that we drew as we began to map the world. They are relevant to arc-minutes and arc-seconds of portions of the globe, and are immensely helpful for charting courses, especially with sailing.
Temperatures were designed with specific goals as well. C has 0 for when normal water will freeze (useful if, say, we were made of that shit) and 100 where it boils. F was designed with 100 as roughly the temperature of the human body, and 0 for when salt-water will freeze.
