I grew up on 4chan. When I first joined it was this nexus for creativity. It was this wild, chaotic, place where a lot of ideas could be smashed together to make something new and interesting. Unfortunately the internet as a whole became self aware and deconstructionist, so people started making posts about making posts instead of just unselfconsciously making stuff. The older more self-aware users gradually left to be replaced with people trying their best to imitate the culture that was left behind. This has happened multiple times creating this cultural game of telephone. This is where a lot of the seeds for the alt-right comes from, IMO.
No one makes anything, no one wants to try and make anything, it's just a weird simulacrum of a simulacrum of a simulacrum. Like how you don't ever truly remember something, you're remembering the last time you remembered it.

In my eyes, 4chan is a perfect representation of the state of the entire internet at any given time. Throughout the years I have observed it change alongside the way the internet was viewed and the purpose for which it was utilized by the masses.
When it was created, it was meant to serve a target audience that was made up, primarily, of techsavy individuals who were also very likely to be into anime and what you would commonly refer to as "nerd" culture.
As the internet became more popular, 4chan evolved into a place where people from all backgrounds and with any interests could chare their ideas and speak their minds on any topic, while still being largely anonimous.
Now, it is a place inhabited by those who were left out of the proverbial "good old days". They took it on the same path the internet as a whole is. A path filled with massive amounts of porn, regurgitated ideas and opinions that people say out loud, not really because they believe in them, but either because they have been doing it and have seen it done it so often that they do not know any better, or (even worse) they do it for fun/to be what they view as a "troll".
Sure, if you look carefully and often enough, you may find a gem from time to time. A moment of beauty, where human creativity/logic/humor bursts through the mass of rot and decay. But, alas, such moments are long gone. Now, only those that do not know better find it entertaining.
