A feeling that makes a human human, is the fact that we have emotions. We can love, hate, be happy, sad, angry, have different ideals, etc.

The part that truly makes us human though, is the realization that we're all gonna die someday, and we know it. To me, that's the greatest fear of all.
>>
>>767436828
op here, dont have any arguments, how can love really be the answer? humans love, but also animals
>>
>>767436483
I think a human is made human by the fact that they know they will die and yet they try to create a life that they are happy with
>>
>>767436483
>>767436953
Animals have emotions. There is literally nothing that makes humans special. Once you accept that OP you can move on
>>
>>767437034
>>767437258
>>
>>767437258
op here
i know that already, animals can experience emotion just as well or even better than humans, the question remains, if they can do that, how are we any different?
>>
>>767437410
You aren't. Man is just an animal
>>
>>767437511
man is an animal. but we are unique because we have consciousness.
>>
>>767437511
yeah, but really, whats so special about being able to use a computer, or go to work everyday?
i mean what is a human not by comparison to another species, but by justification of ourselves as a whole, in other words, are you human? and if so, what characteristics define you as such?

Humans have physical traits that distinguish us from other animals, and the sum of these trait is "human". But humans are no more special than elephants or amoebas.

>>767437695
Neanderthals had consciousness too
>>
>>767437890
neanderthals were human too
>>
In a Million years the things that make you will still exist, In a million years the world you walk on will still exist, in a way we are immortal but only at a microscopic level. These thoughts are what start my panic attacks, knowing that im nothing
>>
>>767437890
yeah, but i mean, beyond of physical traits, or consciusness, what is acting humanely? is it showing mercy or forgiveness? if we are nothing but just another species, why have we been cursed with a consciousness? what makes us different? there has to be at least something other than 5 fingers on each hand
>>
>>767437970
Is anything with a consciousness human? It seems circular to then use that as a definition
>>
>>767438164
the only things we know that have consciousness are humans.
that is what separates us from animals.
if something else was discovered to also have consciousness, it would not be an animal nor would it be human.
>>
>>767438133
You should take comfort in the fact that these positive things are not just limited to humans. Many animals behave altruistically. I'm a panpsychic, so I think all things are conscious, if only a little
>>

Question: can a human not be a human?
>>
>>767438487
op here, ok, lets put it like this...
In 1955 research showed that in the most developed countries(Switzerland, USA, France, etc.) cases of murder, suicide and alcoholism were more prominent than in poorly developed countries, has the progress of mankind turned us into something else?
>>
>>767438895
No, it's just made us more isolated, which makes us sad. But we're still human. We're still good
>>
>>767438895
wow, that's some actual data right there
overall crime in developed countries (murder included) is way lower than underdeveloped ones, by a margin
alcoholism and suicide is tied with other factors, definetly not prevalent in central and northern europe
progress has nothing to do with it, but rather, the short span of psychological an behavioral sciences, and the way society and culture is structured, but it's slowly changing, medication, therapy and prevention is proving to work
>>767439013
among other factors, but isolation is a serious thing, and pretty prevalent in developed countries
>>
>>767439013
humanity is inherently good?

I believe what makes us humans is that we have the knowledge to understand our surroundings.

Many animals aren’t familiar with the man-made technologies or creations today, and when disaster strikes or will strike, they tend not to know what to do (burning houses, tsunamis, cars passing by a road). But us humans understand what is around us, so we know what to avoid or when to prepare

With robots, they can only recognize what’s on their world, the online world. They’re good with algorithms and numbers, but when it comes to automated cars avoiding people, they’re not there to a point like us. When it comes to understanding speeches and phrases, they’re not as fluent as our minds can process words from other people. Technology work with numerical precision, but we can work with natural adaptation.

Also, we like to surround ourselves with likeminded people. That’s why we’re in this thread (which isn’t really a feels thread. More-like a questions thread or something): we want to surround ourselves with people we can relate to, people that feel the same things we feel (or want to feel). Animals can’t really have that association; They go in groups to survive nature. We do it just because we can, regardless of our survival (someone mentioned about us knowing that we’ll die, but that doesn’t stop us from being with one-another). I think the beauty of knowing our surrounding gives us a special look into life, as we can see what’s coming next.

but idk OP. Hope you’re doing well these days.
>>

Being human is for the self to recognize. Its to congregate with like minded to exist and perceive purpose.

Mostly, being us is drivin by the reassurance that other people can relate to your own reality and for the most part, agree on matters.

Personally I can't think of a more powerful feeling in this meat suit than being with humans that understand you. It makes us stronger
>>
>>767436483
Every human has four endowments - self awareness, conscience, independent will, and creative imagination. These give us the ultimate human freedom...

The power to choose, to respond, and to change.
>>
>>767439861
I’m sure you’re human, OP. You’re still here compared to some cats that recently passed from a house fire on the news. You’re with people that wants to feel in a feels thread. And you’re feeling okay too, so that’s a plus!

It's a terrible experience and realization. Humans don't work well with loneliness.

To answer your question it doesn't exclude you from human status. However it's an unnatural state, that cripples our being

25. I am a man yeah. how did it end for you? im glad he lasted longer cuz we bonded even more than we had before and hes like a father to me. but sometimes I just wish it was over sooner. hes in so much pain now and he has trouble accepting that this is all downhill from here. lost 16 pounds in the last two weeks. hes calling me in the middle of the night begging to get a doctor but the doctor can't help him. All we can do is feed him more morphine and hope the pain dies down. it usually does. but he gets so worked up and i wish i could say anything other than 'this is how it is'.

nah, totally wrong, it's more like a curve
when a human is young, or elder, won't have the opportunity to do anything, because of lack of experience, or physical limitations, it is in the middle, specially around 35-45, in their apex, where they're the most dangerous
But that has nothing to do with humanity, dolphins like to rape the female children of other female dolphins, so they can stablish sexual slaves; whales love to break the bones of seals by "playing" with them, only to watch how they try not to sink deep into water and die; violation, specially among minor females, is more than 60% of reproduction among primates, and we are not so different from them. We are not "dangeruos", everything is dangerous, we just have the conscience of it, and the means to reach a higher level of causality, leading to a more sofisticated danger, but a rock flying in space or a tidal wave, with enough size, is much more dangerous than anything I can do in my next 10 years

>violation, specially among minor females, is more than 60% of reproduction among primates

yeah mostly same experience, it was my mother in fact, I've studied medicine so I knew she was going to die, the situation was pretty hard. I'm also a man, 24 yo.
I tried not to burn myself inside the hospital, it's easy to force oneself, but know your limitations, it is important to care of yourself. My mother had a lot of trouble accepting the downhill too, she was blindly hopeful, I found myself between blind optimism against all proof, or bitterly realistic to the point of depression. I've already developed a cold heart, so when my mother was calling in the middle of the night for painkillers, I was already going through my protocols, in some situations it was a good idea, in some weren't, I just acted in that regard, explaining her in all moment. She would be apologetic, furious, kind, sad, hopelessly affected by dread, optimistic, brave, nostalgic, irritated and/or numb, sometimes painkillers made her see terrible things, totally normal, sometimes she would be obsessed with something, sometimes she woouldn't want to listen physicians and just wanted to die. Don't overthink it, know your limits and care for you, accept that everything and everyone is going to die, and that isn't a bad thing, and learn that, sometimes, objectivity and analitic behaviour is way more important than compassion. He will die, you can do nothing about it, it may not be now, but it will happen, focus on other things, that let you stay afloat, and try to make what's best for him, even if that means telling him hard words

this situation has taught me that I don't really have limits. I need the time to relax, but if my friend wasn't coming to visit I'd just not take the time, I'd have moved in with him instead of the caregiver and kept taking care of him.

its spooky how similar our situations are despite the differences in their illness. on top of all this craziness, he is a cult leader so there's lot of other crazy things flying around that i have to deal with. Unfortunately I'm his right hand man through everything so most of them are looking to me now and it was really hard for awhile. I thought there'd be more people putting up a fight and i could just 'lose' that fight, but only one person was really against it. It feels really weird having all these older and powerful people coming to me for advice and help and i keep waiting for the moment i fuck it all up but its going well so far. it just feels surreal when that stuff happens.

i just wish he'd stop suffering. it looks now like hes going to lose his mind again. last time he stopped eating it happened too and he went into a bit of a waking coma. i imagine thats the path hes headed down now but this time they wont put a feeding tube on him.
>>
>>767442048
more so, it was among 60-80% in humans at least until the renaissance era, where laws targeted specifically children. As a medicine student I've read a lot about it, and it's chilling

>asking a girl anything

No girl ever is going to say yes to a question like that, I could play the bro and tell you that she was a bitch, but this one was your fault.
Alpha males never ask shit, if you want to grab her hand just do it in a subtle way, if she gets uncomfortable and doesn't like it let her go and don't make a big deal or of it, you can try it again when you feel is the right moment.
>>
>>767442919

this anons not wrong. its not even about being alpha really, but rather about the tension. thats what gets women going (and a lot of men tbh). asking for consent is a boner killer. what makes it fun is not knowing whats going to happen, just trying to get a little closer, trying to get a little more risque.

Been a bit miserable lately lads. Can’t help but feel like my teen years were the best years I’ll ever have and I wasted them by being a shy, mopy cunt. I wish I could redo them.
>>
>>767441737
I regret allowing myself to cave in and reject others so I could be alone, I thought that would be better for my mind but it has it's pro's and con's the best being I'm much nicer to people and I'm always happy because I only do what I want to do but the worst is being detached from those people I lack sympathy for others it's ironic.
>>
>>767443057

if you wasted them, then they can't be the best. just have fun for the next few years and make them better than your teens. and if you meant more in the 'they had the potential to be the best' that does suck but its too late. instead of whining about how things wont be as good as they couldve been just go make things the best they can.

as you get older you find out the teen years are a unique time but that does not make them the best time. for me frankly being an adult is way better than anything ever as a teen.

>>767442635
you clearly don't know your limits, probably because you are emotional, I recommend you to stay focused and analitical, overemotion will only make you be subjective and will make you do mistakes. I'm pretty scientific so the moment I hear anything cult-like or pseucoscientific, I just shut that part of my brain, when asked I just answer neutrally, people can believe what they want, there no need to do anything about it, but it is important for me (or you) to not be swayed. Suffering is part of life, it sucks now for him, but there's little to be done, the thing about cancer is that, given early supervision, it would've been treatable, but we are not perfect and some people tend to be scared of those things, making them emotional and making them commit mistakes, understand that this is not your fault, or theirs, but life itself. Having cancer isn't bad, it's just what it is, tell him that a good life, fulfilled and accomplished, is all we can aspire to, when the moment is right he'll be a cog in the engine of life, like we all are.
Besides, if he believes in any kind of god, or afterlife, that can help him. My mother was deeply catholic, and I'm deeply atheist, but I did mention her her religion in order to help her in dire moments, beliefs are a powerful tool

I believe most people don't mean harm to anyone, but I also believe most people don't realize how important decisions are, and how not wanting to do harm isn't the same as not doing harm. For example, a mother that is too caring of a child, can easely harm him/her a lot, if such behaviour is persistent

Our ability to ask ourselves that question is what makes us human, anon.

>everyone has a limit

idk man, sounds like you were too weak to even let yourself feel emotions with your own dying parent, you know something virtually all people go through. meanwhile other people go through fucking hell for their entire lives but still manage to survive.

maybe you are just more limited than the average person.
>>

liked that

I learnt that during med school, has nothing to do with my parent, in fact, the death of my parent did affect me a couple months, but nothing more... usually people gets more affected
>>
>>767445255

>i learnt that during med school

learned what? that everyone has a limit? cuz you still havent cited any fucking logic or reason behind it other than you want to believe it in a discussion that was already rather hyperbolic.

>affected

you already said it was because you didn't get emotional and treated your mother from a scientific analytical approach.

just don't go around acting like a pretentious twat telling people you don't know that they are wrong about themselves pretty dumb desu
>>
>>767445413
look how you are reacting
>>
>>767436483

op if you honestly dont have the brain cells to understand, you know your options.

yes if he is an animal

I want to be innocent and pure, but I come with a bad past?
>>
>>767436483
An ability to watch rekt threads no matter how bad unless there is a badly broken leg in slow-mo.
Also some weird desire and joy watching puss ooze from the body in copious amounts.
>>
>>767446848
since innocence and purity are subjective characteristics, then you can or can't, according to your own definition and situation
>>
>>767437706
humans are special because of their greed.
a normal animal just wants to get by and survive, stop after its eaten its fill but a human will always want more
>>
>>767447820
wolves, dolphins, bears and dogs (to say some examples) do that too, specially with food, it's called instinct
>>
>>767448152
they limit themselves in some way, be it food or mates
humans want to make things easier for themselves, inadvertently making it easier for others - thats how capitalism can work, people do whats best for the world because its whats best for them
we created more advanced tools to cover our weaknesses like baskets shovels or huts, eventually coming to this level of civilization
>>
>>767448411
well that's a pretty big advantage to be honest, and we can use it to improve everything, not just ourselves. Still hard to do anything 100% right when everything is so damn interconnected
Do you believe we should go to mars? I mean stablishing a colony there
>>
>>767448579
i believe going to mars is the best currently known way to preserve our population growth, humans will find another way if it doesnt work out though
>>
>>767448638
nah, it will work out, eventually, it is definetly within our reach
>>
>>767448703
itll be pretty cool when it does, almost like an update to a game just bringing new shit
after all, maybe this is the first step to long ass space travel - but that likely wont happen in my lifetime so i wont think about it
>>
>>767448842
I don't believe it will be that exciting, after all it's a pretty desertic planet, but forget about interstelar travel, that's waaaaay beyond our current technology by far, unless we manage to reach near light velocity, and that would be a scientific revolution likely... and still, it wouldn't be nearly as useful, since the nearest star is 2 years away at light speed velocity
>>
>>767436483
their flaws
>>
>>767449052
yeah space travel is overrated for what we're going to use it for, but with all the movies showing humans just being everywhere its a cool thought
>>
>>767449172
yeah XD, but not too realistic
in fact, humans (specially males) suffer a lot in space, losing bone density, sight and, in general, becoming quite weaker, prolongued space travel may be difficult unless we find a way to prevent those medical conditions
would you be part of a spaceship crew? would it be militar or civil?
>>
>>767449062
what flaws specifically though? everything will always have its flaws, an animal may trust a human and get shot or a table may have edges to bust your toe on
>>
>>767449489
even 4chin has flaws... like traps and loli
>>
>>767449303
i would if i had the opportunity, but i wouldnt want to so badly that i would get a college major in it or whatever theyd require in that regard
id want to join one of the first spaceship expeditions for research/testing if i could, otherwise it'd be military
>>
>>767449641
when i say "in that regard" i mean school-wise, i would gladly go through the training for g-force or things like that which could qualify me for civil or military transport - but obviously anyone on a research/testing spaceship would have to contribute in some intellectual way
