Hold the fuck. EU is NOT a country. Any state can legally leave it, but I don't see any states of the USA even being able to leave it and we decide on 99.9% of all our laws, unlike the USA. Countries negotiate as a whole which EU doesn't. EU is more like afriend group than a family.

Because of size mostly. Aside from Russia or China no other country is large enough to divide itself in the same way. Most western European countries are smaller in size than even small US states. Most of them have populations smaller than US states as well
