It's more complicated than that. Gay is not just a sexual attraction, it is an identity as well. There is such a thing as men who identify as straight that exclusively have sex with me. They're called men who have sex with men. They are not called gay.

To boil down sexual orientation identity to a single blanket term is to deny the individual their own history. Most people who are homosexual are raised in a society that is by and large either ignorant or intolerant of homosexuality, unlike other minorities either racial or ethnic, in which the individual is raised within a community of their race or ethnicity.

It's by no means naive. It may be progressive, but that's not what concerns me specifically. I'm more interested in the nuances of sexual orientation, and the nuances show that these blanket terms are entirely misleading and limiting.

Being gay isn't an identity. It just means the people you are attracted to are others of the same sex. In regards to that first statement of yours those are men who have sex with both men and women which makes them bisexual to a degree.
Men loving and wanting to have sex with other men isn't normal and will never be what is considered normal. It sucks, but it's true. Those that are universally thought of by the mainstream as different will always be marginalized. Being gay does not allow for reproduction which is the only way for evolution to occur. We're an evolutionary dead end, at least when it comes to natural reproduction.
Being gay isn't an identity, it just is. That is why we create our own communities.

But that's false. Currently it is entirely about identity. Hence why LGBT is now LGBTQ. No, I am talking about men who exclusively have sex with men, yet do not self identify as gay. Homosexuality is entirely normal and it is natural for some members of a species to have sex with members of the same species of the same sex. It is seen in hundreds of animals; birds, mamals, and even arthropods. It is genetic and can be seen as a natural and far less devastating form of population control. We as humans put the term gay there as a form of separation from the natural world, to distinguish ourselves as different and in a special privileged position in the world. Gay is entirely an identity, a way for humans to easily classify because we are lazy and hate nuance. We like things to be black and white.
>>

It's currently about identity, but it shouldn't. You should see value in people not because of sexuality, gender, or whatever else. It should be about how useful you are to society as a whole. The only reason it's about identity currently is because of people's feelings. Feelings are important, but extremely fallible which means they are influenced by those around you or the content you ingest. It can be influenced. Just because you feel about something one way doesn't make it fact.

Yes, many other organisms participate in homosexuality, but it is not the norm. It is unusual in nature. It happens, but it doesn't happen nearly as often as heterosexual activities. On top of that in other species, mainly mammals, it is a sign of dominance and those same males will also copulate with females.

Also, we didn't make a distinction to separate us from the rest of the world. We did it to define something. People need meaning. We need to understand things. What better way than to define it with a word that has meaning?

Again, that's my argument. Gay is a word for an identity that many people put onto others specifically because it makes things easy. I don't call myself gay because it hurts my feelings or whatever, I don't use gay because gay doesn't accurately describe who I, as an individual, am. We are progressing to a point where Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Bisexual, etc. will become utterly pointless to use and people will become people, which is fantastic. We don't need all these boxes and labels to put each other into.

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. And it is not environmental factors, toxins, etc. It just happens, in nature, which makes it natural. There are animals we have observed that are exclusively homosexual in nature. Even during mating season, when there are females present, there are male and female animals that will only engage in sexual activities with their own sex.

We did, everything we do as a species is to separate us from the natural world. To remove us as a whole from the natural processes of the ecosystem. If a thing occurs naturally and is seen in countless other species, why do we need to put a label on it? Because we see ourselves as different.

People need meaning, but the world does not and will not provide one. WHY do we need meaning? Because we think we are special. We think our lives serve a purpose. And we fall into the utmost despair when we realize there isn't one, that we are not special or privileged in any way. All our intelligence was to serve just an evolutionary purpose. We had no natural defenses against lions or leopards or any of the other predator animals that we both competed with for food and were predated upon.

And remember, most tour guides are volunteers who don't know shit. I once heard a tour guide talk about Magritte's paintings as if they had this deep spiritual meaning because of all the iconography he put in there. Magritte's work is literally a joke. He painted them for douchebags to scratch their heads over and argue about so he could laugh at them because Dada.

You're fun!

I never said people identify themselves as gay because it hurt their feelings so that "point" is irrelevant. I agree that we are moving towards a world where people won't care about stuff like gay, lesbian, straight, etc are no longer needed, but that isn't the current world. We can work towards it, but chances are we'll never see it. We must operate in the world we live in. Those "boxes and labels" you speak of exist in every community, including the gay, bi, straight, whatever communities. We associate things with other things (vague, I know), other animals do that too. They and us find traits we like and dislike and act upon others based on them.

As to your second point; just because something is natural doesn't make that thing normal.

We didn't do anything to separate us from the natural ecosystem. We are and always have been part of the natural ecosystem. We may change it more than other organisms, but we, and everything we have made, are part of the natural world.

I don't believe we think we are special, but I do believe we think we are different to other organisms to an extant. We are different from a wolf. A wolf is different from a deer. A deer is different from leaves or grass.

Saying we had no natural defenses against lions or leopards is frankly a very misguided thought. We developed tools to defend ourselves against potential predators. The makeup of our brain and our ability to adapt were our natural defenses. If we had no natural defenses we wouldn't be here today. We are different not special.

We seek meaning in things so we can define them, so we can further understand something. Not because we think we're special, but because we have a different skill set that allows us to communicate differently and more precisely than most other animals.

I never said you did. It is the current world, we only use these terms because they're there and we're too lazy to think of a different way. We must operate in the world we live in, but we have a collective power to change it to whatever we want within reason. These boxes and labels are used in all different subcultures, sure, but that doesn't make them any less irrelevant. Animals don't label beyond what is absolutely necessary i.e. dangerous things like predator or good things like prey.

Normal and natural are not mutually exclusive. And just because something is normal or abnormal or natural or unnatural does not make that thing either good or bad.

But we did and still do. From farming to domestication of animals, the building of cities, the creation of governments, etc. all these things are there to separate us from the natural order.

We absolutely do think we are special. We as a species have an arrogance about us as a species. We think we are better, we think we are allowed to do these things.

Tools and weapons are not natural defenses. We had nothing to defend ourselves from or compete with predators. We have soft easily destroyed skin, we cannot fight with our bare hands good enough to fend off an attack, we cannot outrun, out climb, or out swim, we cannot hold our breath for very long. Speaking in terms of pure advantages we only have our intelligence, which is what allowed us to develop weapons and tools to be able to out compete and defend ourselves. Without those tools we're utterly utterly fucked.

We seek meaning in things because things have to have meaning for us. It's not about understanding, most of us don't give a fuck about the why or anything like that. We have a different skill set that we then used to remove ourselves from nature entirely. A city is not natural. Structures like buildings are not natural. Concrete is not natural. Guns are not natural. Bombs are not natural. I could go on.

You made the point that you don't describe yourself as gay or whatever because you're unhappy. I was just pointing out the fact that you felt the need to mention something that wasn't part of or relevant to the original conversation.

What other way would you choose to describe things?

We have the ability to change things, but some things take time, in this case lots of it. We have the potential for "collective power" but we don't use it and have never used it on a world scale let alone something outside of a subset of a country.

Normal and natural may not be mutually exclusive, but we made a distinction between the two. I also never said anything was good or bad.

What do you think the natural order is? We are part of it. Everything we do is part of it. We didn't break the natural order. We simply made it benefit us. Everything is natural, but not everything is normal. We exist and do things that benefit us like any other animal. Therefore it is natural. Us creating tools was natural, us having high endurance when in shape is natural, there is nothing unnatural about it. We made natural things within our natural environment to survive. Your argument on this point seems to be backed by "we are not not natural", but we are. We evolved, same as any other living thing, we just did it differently than anything before us that we know of. Just because you don't like something about us as a species doesn't make it any less natural.

We didn't remove ourselves from nature. We are a part of it. We just took what is natural and made it into something else that is also natural.

What? Happy or unhappy has nothing to do with it.

In a purely analytic form without any sort of value applied.

It takes not a lot of time at all. When we started really pushing for more liberty and equality it took less than a century. We have people, alive today, that lived under Jim Crow, we have homosexuals who were alive when it was literally a crime to be gay. These dramatic changes happened within their life times. We have used our collective power on a world scale before and still are using it.

We aren't. We aren't competing with predator animals for food anymore. We aren't having to defend ourselves from lions or whatever. We have removed ourselves from the food chain. We have made it so that for the most part disease is a nonissue. We aren't dying of hunger or thirst. We aren't dying because it is too hot or too cold because. With the exception of natural disasters that happen in developed nations, we aren't even having to worry about anything but ourselves as being the reason for mass death.

None of this applies to the third world, where there is no healthcare or any of the things we have in the developed world.

I suppose I may have confused happy or unhappy with your mention of unhurt feelings regarding the concept of relegating yourself as gay or not.

Words mean nothing without value. It's why we made them. We needed a form of communication to understand each other so we made one. A word without value is just a sound.

We are progressing much faster than we have previously in human history in every way. I suppose I was making the point that it took quite a while to do so.

When it comes to our "collective" power we have never truly used it. The human race as a whole has never been completely united in anything. If you have an example please give it.

We are competing against each other. We are the dominant predator. The other predators aren't able to compete with us. That is the natural order. Survival of the fittest. We are top dog among species at the moment. Maybe ants can also lay a claim, but they aren't eating us on a regular basis.

Do you even know what a third world country is? China is a "third world country" in some respects yet they have one of the most powerful economies in the world. That doesn't even include the original classification of what makes a third world country. Which happened right after WWII.

I was saying my refusal of the term has nothing to do with feelings at all.

Words still have meaning without value. Nothing has any inherent value, even definitions.

On a worldwide scale? The Neolithic revolution in which, on the whole, man switched methods of living from hunter-gather nomadic groups to settled agrarian groups. Some never made the transition, mostly in places where agriculture was not possible due to climate, but most of the world did.

That isn't the natural order though. Back when we were still just clever animals with tools we still had to worry about cave bears, lions, hyenas, wolves, leopards, etc. We are competing against each other economically, but even economically we are not preventing one person from accessing even basic things like food and water. We are not killing one another over food or water.

China is by no means a third world country, they are at worst a second world country. Fully developed and industrialized, yet riddled with mass poverty. A third would country is a country with little to no development and with mass poverty. Originally third world countries were merely countries that were not aligned with the Western or Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War.
>>
>>767283812
You're the one who first mentioned feelings regarding that subject.

If something has no value then it means nothing. Something without value is useless. We give a value to cows because they provide food. Cows give a value to grass because it is food. Every living thing gives value to something whether they intend to or not.

Yes, but even some groups in pockets where it was possible didn't do it and thus died off. Also you're speaking of things thousands of years ago. What they dealt with is different from what we deal with. I'd like something more relevant.

Are you forgetting that we are animals too? We do what we do to make our lives better just like any other living thing. Just because it is different doesn't make it less natural.

In regards to the third world country thing what would you consider Iran, India, or Brazil?

Feelings meaning they don't matter.

Value and meaning aren't synonyms. Value is value, not meaning. Every living thing provides value? What about Bubonic plague?

Not at all, plenty of Native American tribes didn't make the switch. Some even made the switch, then gave it up for seemingly no reason.

We are animals, that's right. But we also as a collective, decided we don't want to be animals, so we as a whole got out of the food chain. We don't compete with animals anymore, we aren't threatened by them anymore. We don't face mass starvation or dehydration. We aren't dead because we broke an arm or leg and so can't hunt or forage or defend.

Second world countries. Developing, not developed.
