My step-uncle was in Vietnam, and he was telling the family about how some of the local villagers taught some guys in his platoon how to find the right kinds of dirt to supplement food/minerals when they'd gotten cut off after an evacuation mission.
But you can actually take small dobs of mud (spitting out the rock and plant matter you come across) and suck on it like it's taffy til all the finest particles are dissolved.
You have to be VERY careful out there though and know what to look for to ensure you're not getting ground parasites and avoid areas where the moisture would have cultivated dangerous bacteria, but if you're starving or have lost an excessive amount of electrolytes due to strenuous exercise, it can save your life.
It's NOT a long term solution by any means, but if can often be the difference between life and death in the short term.

Seriously, compared to nature, even the cruelest of confirmed cruel nightmare stories you've ever heard about the meat industry is a THOUSAND times more kind to the animal than nature's predators often are.
Ever seen a wolf pack eat an elk from the back end to the front? In smaller packs (3-6ish?), they intentionally try to prolong it's life and maximize the pain/suffering for as long as possible to keep the blood flowing so it will bleed itself out more efficiently.
From what we know, we think they do this so there isn't much blood trapped inside when it dies. This prevents the meat from getting gamey (which makes it taste worse, and reduces the amount of nutrients that the digestive tract can extract before passing it) by the time the pack is finishing the last of the carcass.
Animals are nigh-infinitely more sociopathically cruel to each other than we are to them when it comes to satisfying the need to consume flesh.

Yeah, my sister got attacked by some wild geese when she was 8 (I was 10). Few other times in my life have I been so happy to be an American with a retired marine for a mom and a firearms enthusiast for a dad.
With where we live, the animal dangers are too prevolent to not have access to firearms. Even at the age of 6, all three of us kids had just as much respect for a gun as any trained member of the armed forces.
Anyway, I saw her getting attacked through the window, grabbed my mom's shotgun (it's always sitting by the door just in case, what with all the cougars where we live) and ran out. I bashed that goose over the head with the butt of the gun (just like we were trained to if we had to), and as soon as my sister was safely behind me, I turned the squawking fucker into a red stain in the driveway. After that, I started unloading on as many of them as I could from the (migrating?) flock before they could even register what was happening. (Because with the geese we get around here, sometimes it will scare them away, other times it'll only embolden them when you kill one.) From my experiences, whether they run or zerg rush you mainly depends on how high or low the first one you kill was in their hierarchy.
Anyway, after blasting about a half dozen of the fuckers in under 2 seconds, the rest were in a mad dash to get as far away as physically possible.
The "excessive force" part wasn't exactly how we were taught to handle an animal attack, but in my defense, it was just us three kids at the house, and my older brother was on the crapper. Us three always got off the bus about an hour or so before either of our parents got home.
And the worst we'd ever had was a small flock, but this time there were at least 15 scattered around the place and entirely surrounding us, so I was NOT going to risk only blasting one and finding out that the rest just took it as a challenge.

My family owns a dairy farm in Missouri. They milk 1,200 heifers 4 times a day. They butcher about 6 of them a month. They live in open fields, get treated by veterinarians for illnesses every tuesday, Pregnant ones live in temperature controlled free-stall barns, they're free to go in and out of the barns as they please. The only animals held in "captivity" are newborns, and even then, they're only kept there to make sure they get the nutrients they need in order to be healthy adults. THIS IS HOW 98% OF FAMILY OWNED FARMS RUN THEIR CATTLE!! They butcher them when they 1) Break a leg (usually cause the HERD trampled them in a 50 acre field while running, which is normal) or 2) they are a steer, which means they cannot reproduce, therefore, were bred TO BE A STEAK!!!

My friend his parents are butchers and at one point the didnt have enough staff for a big day of slaughter, so they asked me to pull still shaking sheep from a meathook and place them on a production line all day. Guess what, I fucking did it because I'm not some sad excuse of a man with hypocritical morals. I spent about 6 hours there with 250 sheep getting halal slaughtered right behind my back, and my friend and his dad skinning and gutted them infront of me. Vegetarianism and veganism are linked to causing issues with brain health. (Just google it.) Additionally, a vegetarian friend of mine found out about 3 years back that she nearly died because of her non-meat diet. Apparently, it's excessively difficult to get the proper nourishment for vascular health (specifically, keeping the tissue that makes up your veins and arteries healthy). She nearly died of a brain aneurism due to a major blood vessel in her brain being too thin, causing it to rupture. By a sheer stroke of dumb luck, she survived because she was already in the hospital getting a routine mammogram when it ruptured.
The surgeon said that if she hadn't been there, she almost certainly wouldn't have lived. Obviously I can't source this last one, but feel free to ask your doctor at your next checkup if your vascular health could be negatively effected by having a vegetarian/vegan diet (which provide sub-optimal supplies of fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins).
Granted, my formerly-vegetarian friend's case is an extreme example of the risk, but don't mistake that to mean that it's a rare issue, because it's at best "uncommon".
