You would have to run the machine for 5 months just to pay for itself. And there is a diminishing return because of the rise in difficulty for blockchains. That is 5 months without me calculating that increasing difficulty or calculating electricity.
The thing is, you can technically turn a profit on any farm, you just need to figure out the best way to run it as cheaply and reliably as possible.
So far, I think the pi's are the best bet. They are super cheap and you can make it specifically for this purpose and nothing else. No wasted energy. Problem is, I'm not tech enough to figure that out the way I need to. But again, you won't be looking at big gains in today's market. You would have to spend like $80k to make like 1.5 bitcoins over 5 months. Against, I didn't calculate for electricity or for difficulty. What you are doing is spending a lot of money up front and hoping for BTC to rise to $50k USD value. Only in an increase in actual BTC value will you make any gains at this point.
