Industry Confessions

Post unsavory stuff about your current/previous jobs that other anons should probably know

>pic related

>worked at Popeyes for two years
>manager for one year
>one of my jobs is to make sure the drink station nozzles stay clean
>have people do this job dutifully because we all drink from there and no one wants to drink mold
>One day do the job myself
>decide to try something different
>take a tiny cleaning brush and stick it up the nozzle instead of wiping it by hand
>comes back black as night
>there had been mold deep in the dispenser tube where the drinks come from the whole time
>nobody thought to check
>probably the same at other restaurant

Moral of the story don’t buy fountain drinks

Not employed but I help my friends out with computers.
Something I'll never tell them is that if they have bedbugs or any insect pests I have to put their laptop in a plastic bag and freeze it for two weeks because those motherfuckers love the heat generated by the CPU.
Also, if I check out a full desktop, first thing I do if I can afford it is cover a tub with a plastic bag and open it with gloves. I've seen the pictures of full-blown nests in these machines. I don't live in a good part of the state anyway and the little fuckers can infest themselves in every corner of a house.

Moral of the story: if you have bedbugs put your laptop in a freezer when you deal with them.

This isn't about where I worked, per se, but here goes. I worked at an oil change place for about a year and a half. A considerable amount of time I spent down in the pit changing the oil filter and draining the oil. I could always tell when a car that had it's oil changed last at wall Mart came in because 9 out of ten times there was something wrong with it. Also, they use fram oil filters so and paint markers so it was easy to spot. Usually, the filter was on WAY to tight. Like, tight to the point to where It could crack the filter housing. Also, they always always always fuck up the drain plug. Sometimes they wouldn't tighten things enough, so people would bring their cars to us, and we would tell them the Wal-Mart dumbasses didn't tighten your drain plug all the way, ECT. Granted, everybody makes mistakes, but the amount that I saw come in from Wal-Mart was considerable. Also, Firestone always over tightened all of their shit too.
>>
I've had to stand by and watch boys be made to strip naked and expose various body parts to be searched. Sometimes it was done in groups.

Can confirm. Our a/c unit was acting up so the guy told my dad to just hang something over it to help it stay cool (it was exposed to blistering heat from the sun.) My dad did this for months. The next guy told us that blocking off airflow to the unit, would just just damage it and the guy wanted us to break it so he could replace it.

Currently at a walmart tire and oil. Can confirm that a vast majority of the idiots working at these places dont have half a fucking clue. We have different guides for torque, depending on year make model etc. Not hard to follow. One of the neighboring wallyshops would always have things way too tight. Not only the drain plug, but the filter tightened to the point of a filter wrench crushing the thing in half. Another shop would tighten the tires to 100ft lbs for every single vehicle. Im amazed they disnt have a tire off.

However, no shop is safe from dumb fucks. A dealer by the name of Marquerts used an impact wrench on my grandpa's drainplug.
The ranting I could do.

If you ship anything with the post office, beware that your package might get to your destination damaged since the employees toss packages all over the place. Not only that but they constantly put really heavy shit on top of fragile or not so heavy packages. I've seen plenty of broken televisions, glass jars, mirrors, etc.

And if you do send with USPS, make sure to write the correct zipcode, that's what we base our shit with. If your zip code is 43456 and you out 34456 or some shit similar, your packages will take an eternity as it will most likely go to a completely different state.

do my own oil changes, never overtighten. can confirm that sometimes they get stuck so bad, oil filter wrench will crush the filter. It happens. But yeah, oil change places suck dick.
>>
>>752794874
>If you ship anything with the post office
ship stuff for business. UPS and Fedex are about 3-5 times more likely to damage shit than USPS. I pack my stuff right, none of my stuff ever gets damaged. People ship me stuff by USPS and don't pack well, it's hanging of the box by the time I get it. Moral of this story: PACK YOUR SHIT RIGHT, and even if you do, UPS and Fedex will fuck your shit up no matter what.

Been working with IT for 10 years now.

Every time a laptop breaks, a key is missing, something that is broken etc and if there is no guarantee left on the computer i order a new laptop to replace it, saves the laptop to bring it after a month or two in what i call "the quarantine" (if now someone would for some reason want to know where the broken laptop went, rarely happens and if someone asks for it it's usually for files that the user put on places which didn't get recovered from the broken laptop to the new one - easy fix for that is to pick out the harddrive and put that one in the "quarantine" instead).

So i bring the broken laptop home and i fix it, spareparts from ebay whatever.

Then i sell it. I get 220$ - 900$ depending on what kind of computer it is. A normal HP/Lenovo or if it's a HP z-book/Lenovo W541.

Also sometimes get my hands on old servers and switches.

Switches i can easily sell for 110$ - 300$ depending on model. Same with servers.

Also take a note, i been working on medium/large-sized companies where i am stationed as the only IT-guy on a office where i am office IT-manager/"All in one"-IT (support, network, servers, etc) so i am pretty much my own boss and nobody knows what i am up to.

I am in charge of ordering new laptops and also recycling of old once.

But i am not dumb, i don't take every single computer i can get my hands on.

Mobile phones like iPhones are also great. Broken displays - easy fix. Broken OSes and the user got a new phone cause his boss got no technical skills to know when the phone really is broken.

Easy money for me.

It's safe, it's easy and best of all, it's good side money.

Not me but my wife used to work on a medical device supplier (portable nebulizer machine, pregnancy test kit etc) and they supply cheap, mid and expensive brands. Most of the time the products stocks are brand less and when a customer ask for a certain brand, the company will just repackage it, put the brand name sticker and sell it as the requested brand. They can sell the same product for higher price they just change the brand name.

I don't support any politician.

If you want to call earning money by "picking up" broken laptops out of the "recycle-bin" for theft?

Do it.
But big companies throw away perfectly usable stuff all the time and they don't even think twice about it. I profit by them wasting resources and also not letting good stuff go into a oven to get burned "cause it's trash".

I was an EMT for a private ambulance company. We had 911 contracts and we did transfers. An EMT will save your life. ER staff are making due with not enough time and equipment. Its the rest of allied health you have to watch out for.

Nursing homes, assisted living, facilities, dialysis centers, and vent farms are basically the epicenter of human misery. They didn't get paid enough. I've seen them ignore patients. I've fucking seen a dialysis nurse not recognize an actively stroking patient right in front of her... and she had vital signs. If a place smells like a UTI, honestly, a bullet for your loved one would be kinder.

The admins are not your friend. My first night, my partner told me, "Avoid the suits." I wish I had listened. They want you to pick up and drop off with minimal fuss, so you can take another patient, so you can make them more money.

One step beyond what you have to do and you will hear about it.

This. House edge is about 20% statistically. Fuck that when it can be 50% or more. You can't claim a machine is rigged even if it is, it's all about odds and percentages.
If a coin has a 1 in 6000 chance to land on it's edge if it were to be flipped by hand, and you have a guy that flips it by hand 3 times in a row, all landing on it's edge, you can't say the toss was rigged

Well, i've been working at KFC as a cook for about two months now. And jesus christ. The only things I would eat from there at this point is the popcorn chicken, because at least we dont clean it in the most disgusting way possible.

So, to make the chicken, there are two tables with the same format, a plastic bucket full of flower and all of your savory "11 herbs and spices", a bowl that you put in one of those industrial mixers filled with water, and a few trays to put the chicken on. About that water though, thats what we use to wash off the chicken before breading it, and it usually stays unchanged throughout the entire day. Disgusting chicken water that you cant even see through and has an unmistakable pink color, and a certain "thickness" too it.

With the extra crispy, you have to dunk it in that horrid water again after you bread it, so you can get a second layer of the breading. Yummy, right?

Not to mention that I havent seen them actually change the oil in the friers once since ive been there. It's usually black and reeks of calories, but sometimes we can get it to look amber with this bag of white shit that we pour into the oil, which makes it bubble over.. I think its magnesium something or bullshit like that.

Several of the dudes there will not eat ice from fast food places because you fucker literally NEVER clean the ice machines.

A couple of the dudes have said that they get calls for them broken and they clean them to fix them and it was clear that the last time it was taken apart was when they fixed it the last time it broke.

Moral: Don't eat ice at fast food places.
>>
>>752796749
Dude. The chances of a 1/10 happening twice in a row is 1/100. So the longer the machine goes without winning, the higher the likelihood of winning becomes.

>>
>>752795393

>>752797086
>every single one of them in the world is rigged to draw your money
While this is true, you can also read the a room. Some machines have better pay and are put in locations to light up like a Christmas tree and be heard the next town over, new machines might have a worse payout rate to cover the initial cost of the machine, if a machine is paying out big in a small room, it's unlikely another machine is going to start going off at the same time, if there hasn't been a win in a while, and people are just pumping the machines, you can take a reading as to which might start spitting.
It's why reserving a machine is such a big deal, if you've loaded a machine with say $500, and get up for a piss while reserving the machine, you'd be justified to shoot a fucker dead if he stole it and hit a jackpot in the next $20

We get a new fleet of vehicles every year and spend about 40-50 hours on each vehicle making it safe and rental ready, and in general fixing all the fuck ups the factory made. This is incorrect. The odds are the same with every occurrence.

Consider this: if a slot machine went 99 pulls without a win, the 100th pull would not guarantee one. Since a randomizer does not "keep track" of when it wins/loses, the odds do not change. This also debunks the "machine is hot" myth.

That's nice to hear. NDT is fun man, I still love it. We honestly have conversations about you guys in the field, and no one wants to be the guy that causes someone to die. And if that person is in the industry, they are quickly run off. I like the sheer amount of fields NDT can lead you to. Right not I'm in oilfield and shipping mostly, but I want to get into aerospace. You really need to be level 2 to make any money, but once you get in, you're in.

I also do "destructive" load testing which is super cool. It gets pretty repetitive, but when something does break, it's fun. I got to do a "drop test" a few month ago. That was awesome. Take a giant crane. Lift a 50k lb skid with it. Drop that fucker 10 feet then inspect it lol.

At the moment I am in charge of the inventory, what comes in and what does out. And it's very unlikely that someone wanted to do a inventory check and start asking questions about computers that has been recycled. But he might have taking newly arrived computers or computers that haven't had its "company life-span".
But that's why there is a quarantine, but who the hell asks about laptops that has been recycled and have no guaranty on it? Larger companies don't give two shits about a old computer. (And old computers today are pretty ok stuff, 3 years are usually the "life-span" of a laptop before there is no more guaranty and "it has served it's purpose.)

Your senior IT employee must have gotten caught with his hand in the cookie-jar or he was stupid enough to steal a computer which demanded a receipt of destruction due to high risk data, not to remove company labels, covered his own tracks and not to sell the laptops where he lives (perhaps someone told on him?).

Or he simply took new laptops or laptops who had still had guarantee and trashed for the sake of just getting a laptop to sell. And that is being greedy!

There is a no (minimal) risk if you "pick up" a computer from the recycle bin when you have followed the companies policy for recycle and the computer in all says "been recycled". Most companies don't use Electric-recycle companies so they get a small piece of money back every time they recycle a computer but just throw the computer right into the trash.

The key is that you don't take stuff that someone will miss. (Even if they check the inventory they don't question that it got thrown in the trash).

Cleaning beer taps is a common practice everywhere. It's why I go to slow dive bars, they've got more incentive to keep the taps clean rather than a bustling pub, club, etc. OP was more focused on soda taps, which it's common practice to clean the bottom aerators, but very few places actually use a pipe cleaning brush to clean the taps and above.

Also, I can't say anything about Coke machines, but we had a Pepsi soda machine in a store I used to work for and they do dick-all for repairs and maintenance. It was running water all over the floor in drive-through for almost a month before my manager threatened to throw the damned thing out unless they fixed it. I avoid tap Pepsi on principal now.

Why not take some initiative and clean them? Why do people care so little about their jobs? You're not going to be a millionaire working at a bar, you know that going in. So why be a fucking faggot about it? Just do your job well. INB4 you pass the buck.
>>
>>752799443
>Why not take some initiative and clean them? Why do people care so little about their jobs?
because i dont get paid enough to do that. id rather show up for my shift and make 300 in tips than spend a few hours cleaning out those disgusting things. that shit takes forever and is disgusting. minimal pay gets minimal effort anon

I will warn you, NDT is extremely hard to get your foot in the door. You may have to slum it in the oil field for a couple years and just keep your eye on the prize. But I have also heard aerospace is extremely stressful, dealing with the FAA and what not. I have a friend who is an airplane repair man, he seems to love his work. I've heard NDT in aerospace is a bit boring, but if I could get my level 3's (just need to test out now) I would love to work in it.

nice answering your own question there.

Why give a shit if you're working in such a reward-less industry? I live with people who are cooks, servers, etc... and they act like their job is harder than being president. Every facet of the day filled with excuses and reasons why they're the best cook/server in town even though there's a line the length of the fucking city full of people qualified and ready to replace them.

If you work in the food industry you are expendable. Why put any real effort into it?
>>
>>752799571
This is what's wrong with people today. Take some fucking pride. "I don't get paid enough to do my job properly." If you're making $300 in tips a night, that's well above minimum pay faggot. Your customers take care of you, and you can't be bothered to take care of them with a little occasional effort? Fucking pathetic.

>>
>>752799748
Because those who put in effort are constantly growing in their position. Why constantly put in the minimal effort hoping that one day you'll "make it?" Just put in some fucking effort and watch doors open up. I went from part time sales to a B2B executive ($90k salary + bonuses) for a company in TWO years by putting in just a little effort. I didn't even kill myself, I just put in a small bit of effort. My manager noticed. Passed my name to a higher up. They hired me at the corporate office. I put in a little effort there. Then I made it to a high level spot.
It's almost like putting in some work gets rewarded if you aren't a cunt.

Where i live there is recycling houses where people can just go in and throw their trash or go to a dumpster and throw it there. As a kid me and a couple of friends of mine sneaked in and dived the electrical-bins for items. We always found something new.

But the real gold is in a big business park where you got plenty of companies. They usually have a common recycling room for every building, the thing is to get in but sometimes it's right in the open.

You have to scout it for a bit and you don't find great things all the time cause there is so many people like me out there,

Work as an IT salesperson.
My customers constantly get pissed I can't sell Apple products for cheaper than the price already listed. Truth be told, if an iPhone X costs $1000 in my store, it means we probably paid $1000 for the phone, meaning we don't earn a dime selling the phones. People don't understand that Apple has insane prices for their products, even towards the other companies who sell their products.
Also, if a customer asks for a TV or computer which I lose money selling, I'll sometimes tell them we're out of stock and sell them something else.

This thread just reminds me of how fucked the workplace is. I had my shit jobs before I had my good jobs, but for most people graduating out of a soul-crushing fry kitchen means entering a soul-crushing cubical. These places all run like shit and have people slacking off and fucking around at the expense of others because there's virtually no difference between doing your job just well enough to not get fired and doing your job well. Actually, if you work minimum wage and do anything but the minimum, you get treated like a tool. There are 10 useless employees for every valuable one, and because it's easiest for the boss to shove all the leftover responsibility off onto the one valuable guy, employees are incentivized to keep a low profile and not excel or do any favors, or they'll be hit with higher expectations for no extra reward. Someone is reading this right now and wants to chime in with the "Well, sonny, if you don't work hard you'll never move up the ladder!" bullshit. They've either never worked in places like this or they did and were too unobservant to notice how little hard work actually gets you in the lowest levels of corporate fuckery. They want to think that you owe customers something and should go above and beyond to make sure John Doe has the best damn burger ever, just because you're there. It's funny, because they'll call you're a lazy communist for that attitude, when what you're saying is actually pretty capitalist, that people should work for their best interests and not waste their lives thinking they owe their bosses anything but what they paid for. This problem could be solved immediately if there were frequent, visible opportunities for advancement and raises, for anybody who wants to work for it. It's an established fact that people respond to that. If you're not willing to ask that of companies, though, you have to accept that you as a customer are gonna get what they paid for.

Head of IT security for a large corporation who handles data of most likely over 50% of Americans and a large population of other nations.

My employees most definitely collect sensitive information at random. Stuff like pictures, browser history, connections, cached payment pages, etc etc.

Second confession - we've also provided security for thousands of government databases. Lets just say previous firms were very lax in how they handled that, and everyone in the US (and likely everywhere else to be honest, lazy firms replicate) probably had their info very easily accessible and is probably already sold.

Hypothetically, I could have worked on naval nuclear reactors for the US government.

If I had worked in that position, which I didnt, then here are some things I would have seen happen:

Training is usually bullshit, and most operators are half trained at best unless they have stood a particular watch station for months or years.

Maintenance is also often completely fabricated. It's easier to make the paperwork look right than go down and do the maintenance.

Necessary operations often occur on the midwatch, to hide them from supervisory personnel.

Operators are chronically undermanned, and never get enough sleep or time off. Five hours or less of sleep a day is the norm. For comparison, truck drivers legally have to get eight a day.

Control of radioactive material is very loose. On more than one occassion, after unsanctioned maintenance, there was a need to dispose of RAM outside official channels. It was dumped in a public waterway.

Radiation exposure monitoring is also completely falsified to maintain the navy's image. Personnel don't actually know how much exposure they have gotten and all the numbers are made up.

I could go on, but basically the nuclear fleet is a very dangerous shit show.

Hypothetically. If I had been there. Which I was not.

Union jobs sound like a bunch of shit.

Nuke fleet was the same way thoigh wth the drinking and drug use. When I got on board my first ship one of the more experienced petty officers puled me aside and told me that drinking on the job was encouraged beca use it "calmed the new guys down".

A coin is not a slot machine.
> How do jackpots work?
Glad you asked. With every pull, the machine sets aside some amount for the house, plays some for the listed odds, and saves some for the jackpot. A jackpot whose payout value is currently under the odds is said to be premature or underripe. For example, if it costs 25c to pull, and the jackpot has a 1-in-10,000 to hit, then there has to be $2500 in the jackpot before the machine is overdue. This has nothing to do with the gambler's fallacy. It's the same effect as when the state lotto gets high enough that the price of tickets times the number of possible combinations is lower than the grand prize.

Worked at multiple retail chains in malls, movie theatre, vape shop.

mall stores:
-vast majority of stores in malls dont have cameras unless it's a bigger store)
-9 times out of 10, if the 'camera' is a black bubble on the ceiling there's nothing in it. i opened one up once to change the batterey on the red led inside it, it was a Rudolf christmas toy.
-shoplifting is easy to get away with if you're not retarded

vape shop:
-we make commision on what we sell
-vapes & juice are often maarked up 30-50% what you can get them for online

movie theatre (regal):
-it costs us $0.03 to give you that large drink you just bought for $7.18
-it costs us $0.06 to give you that large popcorn you just bought for $9.89
-we make no money at all off ticket sales

If you ship anything in the US, period, there is a 90% chance it will go through USPS. It doesn't matter if you go to Fedex or UPS, USPS will have their hands on it at some point.

All of the various shipping services just hand it off to USPS for either final delivery or interstate shipping because it's dirt cheap compared to handling it on their end.

i dont really believe half of these shits anymore,, like this wall of text here...

"everybody agrees..." aha, ye, cause in mcdonalds you are in a totally secluded area where no one can see in. And slapping your cock on a burger is totally doable,

even if "everybody" means my faggot friends, still not likely, and also, obviously you all work together like a big happy family :):) and some other worker seeing this wouldn't give a fuck like "wtf????! (omg ! a retard!)"

unless it was a night shift and there was only 1 customer or something , maybe, but highly unlikely

i also know ppl who worked at mcdonalds, never heard any garbage like this

Truth fact.

Healthcare for well over a decade.

Most nurses become nurses for the payday. Ancillary is under-payed and under equipped. Most changes in healthcare are not to be proactive, but rather very reactive. If policy changes or physical aspects are changed, it is because of a recent event involving risk or a government mandate. Healthcare is a for profit business.

I do not care if they claim to be a nonprofit. Admin runs the show. Providers have to play within those rules.

Also
inb4 the ridiculous amount of psychs. That is a whole thread by itself.

Oh and he will try hard for about 2 days and when he doesn't get a slap on the back and an attaboy he goes right back to trying to avoid working. Takes lunch then goes to the bathroom for 20 minutes then sits in a chair while others work. I've seen him make fake calls to the store so he can answer them and pretend to be on the phone with a customer. He's already fired but the owner doesn't have the heart to do it until after the holidays. The sad part is he really thinks he's getting a raise and has taken to calling himself the assistant manager.

I work a weird hybridized mix between social work/healthcare/residential and have trained several hundred people. Not too many secrets, state and internal audits are a good checks and balances as well as anonymous reporting. The biggest secret is that you should not let your state pay for for-profit health/mental health facilities or residences...any state that pays for-profits over non-profits is a state whose politicians are being supported by the for-profit. Taxpayers get fucked over in these deals, they pay far more money for less effect.
Another major secret? If you're fucked up in the head or can't take care of yourself, don't have kids. I've seen shitty families where great-grandma, grandma, mom, and child all have the same non-genetic-based issues. Four generations of underages giving multiple births with little understanding of nutrition or hygiene costs taxpayers a lot of money for no real reason.

This isn't true at all. The only time this happens is during peak times in the year or if you live in the middle of nowhere.
The only time usps touches packages meant for us(fedex) is when asked to when we are either over loaded on certain routes or we don't have the resources to drive out to your ranch in east Jesus. And even then it's just dropped off at the post office nearest you until they send you a piece of mail the next day telling you to come pick it up.
Even we are overloaded our trucks leave at different times completely and all of it has to be pre-arranged days in advance.

Then you're also told to never go to back of house to check for an item if it's not on the shelf we don't have it. But since you clearly have no balls you don't just tell them we don't have it.

I'm a locomotive mechanic non union paid by hour. Guy that started after me and has no idea how to fix shit gets promoted to Ast manager cause he's a yes man. So now I play company. If there's something that I want at work like a new service truck I take forever to get a job done till they get me what I ask for then I pick up the speed on job task. Then they give me raise for pointing out problems that slowed down the job. So now I get paid more than the Ast manager.

Not exactly industry, but maybe someone will find this interesting...

I volunteered at a US Senator's office in high school and wrote letters on her behalf. All their systems are old as shit and we just fill out templates on Microsoft Word. She also didn't actually sign anything because it wasn't considered important - whichever office assistant happened to be around would do that.

My body worked on the team that answered phone calls and would respond to complaints from the constituents and fill out forms to file them. Sometimes he'd have people calling in saying that they would be deported as early as the next day and to please help and we'd have no idea what to do.
