the PC,s started the campaign as normal adventurers, then I had them solve a murder mystery, they layed some people to rest, gave some one closure and had brought justice to a truly wicked man and lifting the curse" at a price"... then after doing so much for the town they settled down, aside from one who a kind of trader.
2nd session, they had students, investments in the town towards the local business, one even became a mayor. and now the problem is no longer some wicked man. but a kid who is wrapped up in something over his head.
this is skipping over A LOT of details but it would take me several paragraphs. but basicly... lets your players feel better for being kind, rather then being "effective"
