Canadian /b/artender fag here. Winding down from a shift. Questions, advice, and stories all welcome.
Take your recipe questions and shove them up your poopy hole.
Cheers /b/itches.

any interesting rekt, fight, stabbing, date rape incidents?
>>752496267
How much do you force people to tip you?
>>752496267
has anyone gotten naked in the bar?
Why the fuck do you not know how to make an Adios Motherfucker?
Fellow bartender here but in Boston. How many fights have you been in personally?
Sluttiest female you've ever encountered? Ever fuck one?
>>752496386
There are always some kinda skirmish but I've been pretty lucky.
Ive had a guy come behind my bar, but I had a knife so he kinda lost his drive. No deaths on my watch yet, but I did have 2 dudes OD in the pub one night 15 mins before close.
"Sorry honey, daddy's woking late tonight,"
Fentanyl is the real deal. Everywhere. People, you GOTTA get off street drugs for a bit, until this gets sorted out.
>>752496267
Favorite Bourbon for an Old fashioned?
>>752496624
also why
>>752496459
I'm super easy going man. I never look tip-tip. Only my take at the end of the night. Lets me focus on doing my job and then worrying about the outcome at end.
Tipping has got out of hand. Loooooots of shitty servers/bartenders making more than they should, and because of that, lots of great bartenders, and servers making less than they should or leaving the indsutry.
>>752496472
People love to get naked.
I've seen some gorgeous fucking people. <Men and women to be honest.>
But sadly faaaaaaaaaaaaaar more fucking drunk ditch pigs.
<Men and women to be honest>
>>752496553
I average about a fight/year. They never last long or get too involved. We've always got the weapons. (Staff, Knives, Regulars, Sobriety)
I've fucked a customer or 2. One,was at work in the womens room. Fucked far more waitresses.
>>752496653
Buffalo Trace. Can't say I have a real reason. Just a preference. Try making some simple syrup for your old fashioneds instead of trying to dissolve sugar fully into cold ingredients.
>>752496267
your favourite scotch for drinking neat?
>>752497012
Doesn't matter what I like man. You gotta find a reason to love somthing of your own. Or are you trying to get all haxxxx0r5 on me and narrow it down to where I bartend?
Currenly though I'm working on a bottle of McClellands Highland.
Honesty I'm a fan of Irish Whiskey more. (Red Breast if I'm fancy, otherwise Jamesons does the trick.)
>>752497122
McClelland's sounds like some LCBO-tier stuff. Don't get me wrong but LCBO is generally overpriced, friendly staff though.
Personally I like the Islay stuff (Caol Ila to be exact).
>>752496553
Lots of my favourite comedians hail from Boston. A lot of their stories make it look like a pretty tough little piece of real estate. True or exaggerated?
>>752497413
You might be right. I'm a lower middle class fella at the end of the day. I like to try lots of new stuff, but can't throw money away just for shits. Time and a place though.
>>752496267
whats the most expensive drink there you serve?
>>752497522
Glass of Prosseco for $12.
Way overpriced but "The Wanna Be Housewives Of Whatever Town" love it.
>>752496267
Britfag here. I was a former bartender during uni.
In the UK, bartending is seen as a part-time job just barely a step above fast food. On the other hand, in the US at least, bartending is a plausible vocation and can earn decent money.
What's the career path like in Canada?
>>752497850
It's definitely closer to the American system. You can make a decent living if you're good. Good and disciplined.
Constant after work partying has to come a slow if you stand any real shot. That's sort of like every job but this industry it's harder to be disciplined because of your constant proximity.
>>752497427
It's a lot different than 20-30 years ago. Now it's all rich snobs but some of the older guys stories make it sound tough but I don't know personally. Only lived here a couple years
>>752496977
I don't agree with this simple syrup thing if I'm at home. If I'm drinking it I want to romance it before I do. Eagle rare would be my choice.
>>752497122
Also , the 12 or the 15?
>>752496267
Why are Canadians so bad at making whiskey?
>>752498536
Personal choice I suppose. Only have had acess to the 12. Can't imagine I would hate the 15.
>>752498604
Why are Americans unable to stop thinking in terms of better/worse and just accept different?
>>752498697
Excuse my ignorance, why don't the Canadians export any good whiskey?
>>752496267
i got fired from a barback job for being drunk on the job. i fucked up. my bar manager still says he'll give me a good reference but i cant work there anymore. should i trust him? and what are my chances of getting another bar job in the same city?
>>752498003
US bartender here, partying on and after duty is such a huge issue in my area that I just had to transfer elsewhere. My body couldn't handle that kind of lifestyle.
OP, how bad is your area for substance use for people on duty?
>>752498619
I just tried the 15 (12 is in my top 3 whiskies) but it was sub-par compared to the 12. I'd like to try one of the cask strength or the lustau
>>752498811
American Tariffs
>>752498824
Not OP but you'll be fine looking for a new job so long as what you did is kept under wraps and that you own up to making a foolish mistake if it is ever brought up with coworkers somehow.
>>752498919
Depends on the size of the town/city I suppose.
I woudn't worry too much. You fucked up, but if you worked hard some places is all thats needed.
Every company has those couple employess that will never givr but they fill a hole.
If you are serious about shit though, had a drink towards the end of your shift. Be a professional.
>>752498919
>>752498824
more info
just moved here from a different state. it was my first barback job. literally all of the bartenders partied on the job but i wasnt used to it because eventually it caught up to me and i got confused. i worked there for 3 months.
>>752496267
Why would anyone ask you a question about recipes? You mix drinks, you're not a chef.
>>752496267
Second posting on here in less than a month.

>>752498834
Pretty clean. Might take a shot from someone I like, or have a beer while im starting closing duties. Never shit faced though.
Care more about being professional and making money. Sure makes it easy to make the boss see it your way when you're the only reliable source of information and EVERYONE knows it.
>>752498957
>>752498996
thanks guys, its actually in LA. I felt horrible and truly regret it. My bar manager and i have talked about it though and he said he'll do whatever he can to help with a different place so.. i guess thats a win. Ive worked in restaurants my whole life but never worked behind the bar. It was my first gig. Definitely learned my lesson. Iam serious about it and would love to keep learning because they were just starting to let me make drinks and it was really fun to learn.
>>752499000
Yeah you'll be fine.
>>752499049
Good one. You really got me.
>>752499112
If the story breaks and you're asked about it, basically say what you just wrote. I'm assuming you're 21ish.
You're expected to fuck up.
..... just stop dabbing
>>752499063
At least it's an active thread......
Not a fucking "You decided what I say next!" I log off thread.
Maybe if I ever do it again I'll have some customer question instead.
>>752499333
thanks
you mean dabbing as in smoking weed?
i havent smoked weed in like.. 3 years. and yeah, im actually 24. maybe a little late to get behind the bar but whatever
>>752499682
Not weed..... That fucking ridiculous hand/elbow gesture. I know its on its way out, but I still see that shit.... on TV even!
>>752499112
You might find this useful. I had to take BarSmarts when I was first training at a cocktail bar in NC and gives plenty of people a decent foundation of info.

Last Call Then?
Fellow American bartender checking in that is closing up for the night
>>752501147
Welcome. Having one quick beer, and I'm outta here.
>>752501147
I'm open to AMA as long as I am cleaning up and then I drive home if the thread is still open by then
>>752501237
See what happens, have a good close.
>>752496879
More sex stories!
>>752496267
What do you think of these people trying to make bartending look like an "art" or a "sport" with ultra fancy things like that :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxRzzm-mjCE
>>752501399
I once had sex with some broad who had recently broke up with her jealous boyfriend. I woke up to her phone buzzing. Messages disguised as ME... texting her.
He was asking me all sorts of shit questions, things I liked about her, what i wanted to do together.... fucking gross. Finally i took a picture of my and his naked sleeping ex and told him he was a creep.
He called a me a "dead fucking bitch."
and i never saw him again.
She was a smoking red head with HUUUUUGE guns.
>>752501711
I'de LOVE to sit down and try it! I've always thought of bartending as art, or entertaining a little bit. Obviously this is craaaaaaaaaaazy extreme and wouldn't work on very many practical levels. But maybe on some Bilderberg retreat......
>>752501814
First miss of the night.
>>752501814
Don't you see it as complicated for the sake of being complicated and very unauthentic ? Do you really think it taste good ?
>>752496267
Hair of the dog that bit me.
>>752502069
I like pageantry. I was a high school musical theatre nerd so that kind shit excites me a little bit.
Probably no "blow your socks off" taste but worth a try after the show.
Definitely over complicated, but isn't Cirqe De Solei?
>>752502156
Your mom took a cab outta here about 45 mins ago.
>>752502235
>not getting the reference
you're not a bartender, you're a joke
>>752502265
The reference?
Pour you one of what fucked you up last night?
The reference my 70 year old father thinks is cliche?
MODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>>752501711
I think the elegance is fucking dope. Was never a fan of flair bartending since it's deliberate but hella wasted movements.
>>752502197
I see it as "trying too much" and "overcompensating" because basically bartending is a job that doesn't require lots of skill ( except for the socializing skill) and they try to looks like chef because of an inferiority complex.
It's like modern patisserie, where they spend a lot of time trying to create sculpture on their cake.
Or even modern cooking, where they care about puting new ingredient with fancy name and description, to have a nice looking plate, and forget about what's most important : the taste of things.
Basically these kind of things looks fake and gay and trying too hard
>>752502430
Elegance isn't bling.
>>752502430
Depends on the environment I guess. If you've to time to show off I'm all for it. Like I said before though, would work in very few environments.
>>752502492
>>Probably no "blow your socks off" taste but worth a try after the show.
It's mostly a show, and not something I'm going to add to my schtick, but I gotta respect the fucking finished product. (THE SHOW!!!!)
>>752502518
Oh yeah I didn't wanna imply it works for all places/situations. I prefer drinking at dive bars and calling it a night with a cheap Boilermaker. Quick, easy, done.
>>752502710
If you're trying to introduce a lady to the boilermaker, I recommend some fireball. It's cheap shit, but the cinnamon makes your first Makers' easy.
>>752502820
My gf thinks Fireball is disgusting haha. Tend to make her East Side Rickeys when I visit since that one is super easy sipping.
Though I'm also the kind of asshole that pranks people into doing shots of Ango with me.
I'm still not a tequila fan. It's never gonna happen.
RIP your friends
