There's always riding in the north anon. Snow and ice just packs up around your chainrings & rear derailleur, and the chain glides through its own self-made tunnel due to the minimal heat off its own friction. Works well with paraffin or other water-resistant dry lube. No sand & grit when u ride on the ice, because its all frozen down.

You expend much more because there's a shit ton more work to do keeping up with the snow load all through til spring. As winter approaches, your body acclimates, and -10deg isn't even that big a deal. The lower limit of peoples comfort is usually around -25 to -30 range.
