Besides, you can still have representative electoral zones without needing the electoral college.

No Federal amendments would be necessary. If I understand correctly, each state gets the # of Reps and 2 senators as electors--as well as DC if it was a state. The state could make it that the proportion of the popular vote determines which of the state's electors goes to one candidate and what goes to the other (and maybe any third or more). I think there's one state that does it already.
Take New York and Pennsylvania: presumably because of NYC and Philadelphia, some of the electors would support the Dems, while those up in the hills can get some Rep electors in.
