pick a site like Chess com and play rated matches. You'll start at 1000 like the rest...set it so that you only play 100 +- so you don't start getting matched with heavy hitters. over time the rating will stabilize...bear in mind that an online rating is usually inflated a bit so your real life, over the board rating will be less

well I am improving. My mantra this last month has been "slow down." It's bagged me a couple wins I might have otherwise not achieved. So I am getting there. I harbor no delusion of being a master or GM. I would have to have started far earlier and have dedicated a great deal of time to the game.
