Initial thought is it was a typical spherical object that spent time going fast through something that ate the rest away but had a bow shock to protect the centre more. This actually happened, I believe it was hubble, but dont take that as fact. There was a speck of dust debris just off center of the main telescopic lens. It created an image, not only out of focus but with a black/grey smudge in the middle. But when they realized what it was it was already in orbit and impossible to fix. They simply adjusted the program compilers to counter the abnormality and it has worked ever since.

Yes, it is true. During its first three years Hubble suffered from what is known as spherical aberration. Spherical aberration is an optical defect and Hubble's main mirror is two microns too flat. The problem was caused by a faulty measuring device used during the process of polishing the mirror.
During Servicing Mission 1 the problem was solved by installing an extra optical device in Hubble called COSTAR. This used a series of curved mirrors to correct the light path between the mirror and Hubble’s instruments.
In subsequent missions, Hubble’s instruments have all been replaced with ones with built-in optical correction, meaning COSTAR was no longer needed. COSTAR was removed during Servicing Mission 4 in 2010.
Hubble’s mirror still has the flaw, but it is completely corrected for by the design of Hubble’s current instruments

This color image of Earth was taken by NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC), a four megapixel CCD camera and telescope. The image was generated by combining three separate images to create a photographic-quality image. The camera takes a series of 10 images using different narrowband filters -- from ultraviolet to near infrared -- to produce a variety of science products. The image was taken July 6, 2015, showing North and Central America. The central turquoise areas are shallow seas around the Caribbean islands. Once the instrument begins regular data acquisition, EPIC will provide a daily series of Earth images allowing for the first time study of daily variations over the entire globe.
