i remember being lent a modem for a weekend by a friend of my dad's who worked in the local uni tech dept.
this was on a BBC Micro, and would have been about 1987-88? I remember ghostbusters was not long out.
managed to get onto an online bulletin board or two. afair I got the news but slower, and some news about bbc games. found a games BB and had a short conversation in a chatroom, everybody typing HI really slowly, then i got my first download, a program called Icebox.
you put it on the machine and it would freeze whatever was loaded into memory and let you dump it to a disc.
so if you were playing repton, you could icebox it, dump the file to a disk and then give it to your friend and he could load repton back onto his machine at the same point you froze it.
like everything else it worked about 1/4 of the time and took multiple external disc drives and failed discs. if people wanted stuff they'd have to bring their own discs, shit was expensive.

it's all very hazy, i remember some stuff, but after all this *was* 30 years ago. i remember you had to get the addresses for things to look up online from magazines, i remember there was a directory you could go to, to get you started with places to go.
it was like slower ceefax! i would have been about 8-12 when i was first going online in the late 80s and it was only ever a handful of times; there was little to do and no knowledge of how to do it.
between 12-14 i was coping with moving schools, 14-17 i was playing in bands and it wasn't until university at 17-18 that a friend bought a Pentium 100 with a built-in modem, and we started going online on dialup again, by which time (1995?) netscape navigator was the thing.
