I was skinny as a young kid. I started getting fat around 8. I got less fat around 19, but still couldn't take my shirt off. In my mid-20s, I hovered at a pretty lean 170-185lbs (at 5'11" and competitive in brazilian jiu-jitsu). In my early 30s I blimped up to 270lbs. Started a strict 1200 calorie per day diet (entirely of my own accord, no specific menu, just counted calories) 2 years ago, dropped to 155lbs in 1 year. Then increased my calories and lifting and got to 185lbs, trimmed to 170lbs. Then my mom died over the summer and I blew up to 195lbs. I'm hovering around 192lbs now and need to stop with all the fast food.
I'm 39 and my skin is probably totally ruined and will never improve. I've had bad stretch marks since my teens, to the point that people have thought I had scars. I hold fat around my waist and currently have a muffin top. All the medium-sized shirts I bought, to look good in the spring, are now unwearable because I have bulges over my belt.
I have tracked everything I have eaten for the past 2 years, even if I'm eating badly. I may do this for the rest of my life. I've also kept a daily log of my weight.

That's 1634 calories, which is on the low side. I was usually a little over 1800. But, on gym days I'd add 500+.
I also walk most nights, 3-10 miles. 3 is really my minimum. I have done periods where I've made 10 my minimum (max was about 85 in one week). It's very rare I'll do 20+ in a day, but it has happened.
The walking is just to get out and change scenery. I'll listen to podcasts. But, you should assume something like 90 calories per mile if you are about my weight.
I don't do cardio regularly. I've tried real tabata intervals (on an ergocycle) and I've run up and down the stairs of my apartment buildings, and tried running outside (been good at it, the pose method helped).

When I did my 1200 calorie per day diet, I didn't care what I ate, just aimed for a target.
For an example of 1100 calories:
60 - V8 Golden Goodness
100 - Oatfit oatmeal, with flax seeds, maple & brown sugar
100 - banana
430 - Simply Asia spicy kung pao noodle bowl
280 - Smart Ones homestyle turkey breast (chunks, not slices) with stuffing
130 - Weight Watchers giant chocolate cookies and cream ice cream bar
There were plenty of days when I would eat candy or potato chips or whatever. But I would watch the portions and count the calories.
Even if you go over your target, don't get into the habit of lying to yourself about the calories. I notice people will purposely underestimate their calories, as if that will trick their body into dropping weight. Be honest with yourself.
Also, you can't burn off fat, you have to starve it off. A single donut can be 300+ calories, which would requires walking 3.5 miles (about an hour) or running 2.5 miles (if your fat ass can even do that). It's much more reasonable to just eat 500 calories fewer.

You should be lifting, to maintain muscle mass, while dieting.
When I dropped 120lbs on a 1200 calorie diet, I would lift a few times a week. I kept it brief and intense. I'd often just do one major exercise (deadlifts or power cleans mostly; powercleans are very advanced and dangerous), and maybe one or two others if anything else at all.
I still lost muscle, but I wasn't lifting while I was fat, so its hard to know how much I lost before the diet.

That's a pretty good perspective on things. I haven't been a huge soda drinker since I was a kid, but I would still have a couple per day, or an energy drink, for the caffeine boost and then strictly drink water the rest of the day. Well that's still 500+ calories. Ever since I started trying to trim down I have found green tea gives me the same caffeine for 0 calories.

Your metabolism will happily drop down to compensate for a reduced calorie diet, then stay there. On the other hand, your body will quite happily shit out calories it doesn't feel the need to keep.

1) Eat as few concentrated sugars as possible. I hate the term 'refined carbohydrates;' it's meaningless to most people. Stop eating chocolate, drinking anything sugared, including perfectly natural fruit juice.
2) Do all your eating in an eight hour window, usually between noon and 8.
Do these two things, and you'll watch the pounds melt off and stay off. Eat all the calories you want, and more. Just make sure as few as possible are sugar, or sugar substitutes such as sucralose, asparatame, or stevia.

I've just started picking it up again after being too busy for a while. Being too busy --> forgetting to eat, sometimes only eat once a day.
I eat real healthy, which means no sugar or other sweet or fatty foods, except for fruits, vegetables, nuts.
When I'm busy, I try cook quickly, so I forget to eat meat, sometimes I don't eat meat for two weeks, because I simply don't think about it.

I recommend roasting vegetables. It's a bit less work and produces more edible results. I'll do two big, heaping trays of vegetables to get through a week. One mix of peppers, carrots, and onions and one tray of just broccoli.

Do you cook on gas stoves or electric?
It usually doesn't matter, but you have to be careful to not put the gas too high, or it will boil /cook too fast.
Boiling water = about 100 degrees Celsius or 212 Fahrenheit.
bubbles will appear in the water, turn down the gas a bit , so it will stay hot, but it won't bubble as much.
Same with cooking, if the butter / oil is too hot, it'll spat around everywhere, on your skin, on the wall/tiles everywhere. Besides, there's a good chance that if you will cook on too high gas, the food/ meat (Especially chicken/pork is dangerous if undercooked) will be undercooked / raw inside, while burnt / welldone on the outside.
A lot of things are learnt per trial and error, cooking is one of them.

The chopping can be time consuming. I had been buying multicolored peppers, but it takes minutes to do each one, and I'd do a half dozen at a time. Most supermarkets will offer freshly pre-cut vegetables, but I won't pay the inflated prices on principle. Someone pointed me to Trader Joe's, who has packages of frozen pepper strips. I'll buy store brand, cut carrots (I prefer the matchstick kind). Then all I have to cut up are two onions and a bulb or two of garlic (the garlic is still a pain in the ass).
Cutting up chicken breasts is also a hassle.

protip: roast on aluminum foil with no baking sheet and there is literally no cleanup.
1) put foil on top of baking sheet
2) turn up the edges of the fail
3) put olive oil on the foil
4) put veggies on the foil
5) go to oven, side the foil off the baking sheet onto the rack
6) put baking sheet on counter until veggies are done
7) grab a corner of the foil - it won't be hot (weird, but true, it's like walking on hot coals - no heat capacity) and pull it onto the baking sheet
8) put veggies on plate
9) crunch up foil and throw away
10) put backing sheet back in cabinet because it's not dirty at all
11) mange
protip: you need the baking sheet to keep from dumping the veggies everywhere putting it in or taking it out but you don't need it to cook
protip: only grab a single layer of foil. it will be hot if you grab multi-layers

I actually do use aluminum foil. The only thing is, I use pans that require two pieces of foil, and shit often leaks between them.

You might have acid reflux. Try Prilosec (it doesn't take effect immediately, you need to be taking it regularly for a while to get an effect). For short term relief, try Tums. I had acid reflux when I was fat. I forget, the line was either 230lbs or 250lbs, where if I was above I had it and below I didn't.
Also, you might have an ulcer or something.
In short, get checked out. Sounds abnormal and probably treatable. This shit tends to get worse if left untreated.
Fucked up story: My grandmother let her acid reflux go to the point that her esophagus had to be removed and replaced with a piece of intestine. After that, she had to go periodically to have rods shoved down her throat to stretch it out.

At 270lbs, I could manage a chin-up or two, pull-ups have always been harder for me. At a pretty athletic 170-185lbs, I could bang out a good 13-15 chin-ups, no idea on pull-ups. After losing most of the fat and hovering at 190lbs now, I get an easy 10 chin-ups and can force out 5 pull-ups. I don't train for it specifically, but I do assisted pull-ups from time to time.
I'd love to be able to ace the various special forces qualifications, just to say I can do it (at about age 40). That means a good 15-20 pull-ups in 60 seconds. The hardest part would be doing 1.5miles in about 8:30 (a 5:20 mile). Right now, I'm at a 9-10 minute mile, and really can't sustain that pace for the full mile anyway.
