There are two biological genders and a spectrum of genders people attach themselves to in their head.

I speak to my friend about this, who's far more educated in this than I am.
Basically, "man" and "woman" are sexes. There are only two of those. You're either male or female, end of. Transgender persons strongly associate with the opposite gender, and feel much more comfortable acting, dressing and otherwise "being" that other gender. Of course, it is a mental illness - the current remedy for which are things like hormone replacement therapy and "transitioning".
It doesn't fix all of the issues, and transgender persons often have multiple other things mentally wrong with them aside from dysphoria. Transitioning doesn't make these go away.
Back to my main point. Gender is essentially a social construct (read: not sex, gender) that enforces roles on a person. A man is typically the "protector" of his family, and the woman is the "caretaker" (for lack of a better term).
This is where the problem lies currently. There's no need for those roles to be associated with each sex now. Aside from procreating, of course - you can't easily change biology. Since gender is a social construct, then, and these constructs have been heavily relaxed (because we've advanced enough to allow for this), a man can act like a woman and vice versa, and there is no logical reason that shouldn't be allowed.
These kind of things all get blurred together into one SJW mess of propaganda, coupled with mental illness. They're not strictly the same, unlike the media and SJW like to portray.
