Why didn't Mystical Ninja go on to become a popular series? It seemed to have the elements to comprise one, and new games in the late '90s and early 2000s were getting sequels if they were particularly good. Did the game not fare well, critically, or in sales?

>>750745095
Very obvious answer, yet extremely compelling. In 1998, through 2000, sometimes 2001, I played it. I also played Majora's Mask in 2000-2001, which I would say is about equally as good, although it seems like the fans are divided pretty much over it.

Mega Man prolly would have sold a hell of a lot more copies if it had decent box art. I swear I avoided that game because the artwork on it was sooooo shitty. A buddy of mine loaned it to me like "yo, it's actually a good game, try it!" and I loved it.

Memories, i guess. It was the perfect game, totally unexpected and i had so much anticipation for the second but it tried too hard to change a system that wasnt broken. Also, the levels, youre basically playing the game twice over. It just didnt have the same unbelievable magic from the first, although there were some great moments.

KH 2 is "better" in the sense that the combat in the game has more "open" battle arenas. This allowed for faster movement and more flashy battles where Sora and Co. can fly all over the place. It also removed heal spamming which forced the player to be more tactical about healing and forced the player to be more focused on fighting as opposed to switching gears in a bind and finding a semi-safe spot to heal, but all of this is more of an action RPG preference as opposed to sincerely being "better."

The reason why KH1 is probably better is because it technically didn't have time to put it's foot in it's mouth in terms of narrative. KH heavily establishes a "good vs. evil" theme. If you do that fighting "neutrals" or "nobodies" has to be done particularly well else it kind of falls flat. Like could you imagine if in Micheal Corleone's arc to become the Godfather he didn't have to take out nastier pieces of work than his father, he had to take out people neutrally aligned? Part of the reason that's kind of hard to imagine is because it already starts to sort of fall flat.
KH1's strength was that it was a simple story -- a boy and his friend's wish to explore new places and Sora's wish to find his friends. That's a very solid desire line. Organization 13 get's half it's members rubbed out before you even get to the 2nd game which renders takes away some of their teeth. If their goal is for you to release as many hearts taken by heartless, why are they and any nobodies up in your grills at all? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The whole prologue with Roxas and Namine ties in CoM, sure, but at the cost of a stronger and more simple narrative.
Nobodies are designed kind of neatly, but their tie in is anything but.

In the middle of playing it right now with the Master Sword quest. One of my favorite parts is they don't sugar coat Ganon at all. He fucking wrecked the entire region and only Zelda is keeping him from destroying everything. Like the Divine Beasts as well, They are ominous watching them from afar.

>the series is complete shit now
ODST and Reach were both kind of boring to me, but I actually liked Halo 4. 5 wasn't so good, either, mainly because in every mission, you have AI companions with you, and it kind of takes away from that sense of being all alone against near impossible odds, yet managing to survive anyway that made the first game so good. They've ruined the atmosphere of the games with that shit.

Tribes and, especially, Tribes 2 pioneered the multiplayer gameplay found in Halo. Tribes2 was infinitely more of a tactical game.

As a single player game, Halo all day, but online as a multiplayer game Tribes and Tribes2 were hands down better.
>>
>>750749214
i liked 4 as well, but it was easier to type than "the series is complete shit now expect 4 wasn't bad." than again i just typed it out now so i guess i'm just fucking retarded.
>>
>>750749149
The only thing negative I can say about the game is that they should have had more than 4 dungeons, but all the different shrines, and just the sheer amount of world there is to explore kind of makes up for it. I've easily got 200 hours in the game, and I'm still discovering new shit every now and then. And the DLC is even good. The master sword trials were hard as fuck, but not frustratingly hard.

Addictive games are more profitable than great games, and also easier to make.
Nintendo are an exception because they have a reputation to uphold.
Most great games of the last 10 years (besides nintendo) have been indie titles because they're trying to make a name for themselves.

>>
>>750754091
Ok I'll take that as a query.
Quake was an important game, that much is true, but it doesn't hold up under scrutiny. It's generally considered the first true 3d fps, and it did have a lot of that id flair for level design and such, but most of its appeal came from the 3d. It handled nicely, guns were good, killer soundtrack...but it falls short of a 10 for a few reasons.
First off, it didn't really have as much impact on MP gaming as it might seem. Doom already opened the door to deathmatch, and while popularity grew with quake that was due more to advances in networking technology. It was Quake 3 that really ignited the deathmatch scene, though it was then competing with counterstrike for attention.
Secondly, it suffers terribly from 50 shades of brown. They went too hard on the grit, which coupled with grainy textures made it look a little too messy.
Also consider that the legacy of a game doesn't necessarily denotes it's quality......
Ugh tablet typing isn't good for long posts. Feel free to ask for certain details so I can reply more succinctly.

I have, and I have very strong feelings on the matter.
First off you need to know, in my opinion Doom 2 is the GOAT (increased enemy variation just puts it over the original)
Most doom fans dismiss the brutal doom mod as a gore mod that only adds blood effects.
THEY. ARE. WRONG.
The brutal doom mod (in my opinion) achieves the impossible and actually improves the game. There are many subtle tweaks besides the graphics that really polish the experience. One example - imp leap attack.
As intense as it gets and satisfying beyond belief. 11/10 mastapeece.

I concur with your observations wholeheartedly, especially on the improvement notion. I feel the incorporation of simply being able to target and shoot enemies which are behind the first enemy that is straight in front of your shot (even with height difference for those unfamiliar) achieves the effect has greatly benefited doom as well as bring it to a more modern standard without obfuscating the original. I pick this one because with that and free look are the only things which quite irk me with what standard I have today for games but wouldn't mind say 15-20 years ago. Now for say Wolfenstein I could live without that feature because of its lack of verticality.

Doom 2 is also the one I am playing now (for the first time). It's so nice to be able to play these games now, I never had a computer that could handle doom back in the days.
>>
>>750754412
1st is probably the best in the series, I like it better than Alter code F -- it's remake.

2nd is a fairly weak game. It has it's moments, but it suffers from having a shitty plot thought most of the game, an interesting twist in regards to the main antagonist organization, a bizarre twist that leads to the 2nd the last boss fight which was already a terrible plot point IMO but the twist somehow made it even worse, and is mired in one of the worst engrish translations I've ever had to endure. You'll Never Be Alone Wherever You Go is pretty neat opening though. Also the main character's transformation ability is pretty neat. Lots of optional bosses and content too. The final boss, which is more of a cinematic experience than a "true boss fight" is also stereotypical yet oddly moving.

3 is a solid game and tries to rekindle a lot of what worked in 1 with a dash of what worked in 2. In fact one of the main antagonists is a direct homage to one of the protagonists in 2 and an antagonist in 1 in a good way. This game has vastly more interesting and tactical boss fights compared to the 1st and 2nd entries. The story is alright but quickly tanks, IMO, as it builds up to the final boss. Kind of disappointing, but at least it was somewhat foreshadowed.

All in all I give first a 9/10
Second 6/10
and third a 7/10.

This game like follows 3 act structure to a T and manages to customize it to every individual gaming experience.

Instead of using action as a hook like so many other games it uses the fun of minigames in the millennial fair which is just kind of genius. Instead of having to endure a boring cutscene or that "tutorial battle" in which you only control Ramza in FFT, you're free to stay as long or short as you like.

Pacing is amazing. Sets up everything you need to know by the time you hit the call to adventure in the Aeris Dome.

Midpoint 2nd act climax with the fight against Magus is really freakin' cool.

Kingdom of Zeal creates such an amazing sense of wonder when you get there, and they actually do something never done before with a silent protagonist at the bitter end of act 2 which blew me away the first time I played.

Act 3 is much like the millennial fair in the sense you can spend as much or as little time as you'd like on the side quests.

It's a game tailor made for the player. I don't think any JRPG has quite been able to do that since.

Oh I remember the first time I got there my jaw dropped. What an atmosphere, no pun intended, when you finally get up there. Take that place and compare it with 'The Future' - polar opposites. It just makes the impact of Zeal all the greater to player.
>>
>>750757586
Trust me, missing out on the 2nd game isn't so bad. There are 2 antagonists that are supposed to be comic reliefs. The engrish makes it so tedious and annoying and that's the tip of the ice berg.

I played and beat it once. I don't think I'll ever pop it in again.

From a player's perspective, just be on guard when you play 3. Lots of boss fights and most of which aren't pushovers. It's a lot less "Armor down and then nuke" like it was in the first game.

For full effect of intensity, go for doom 1 ultra-violence, no deaths allowed. If you die, restart the chapter.
For serious hard mode, do the same thing for doom 2 all 32 levels (which I managed)
I then did final doom but no hard mode, just no death per level was hard enough!

Yeah I think I actually may have that GBA one. Good on keeping your cart', too. I remember my cousin playing this one day when I was visiting as a kid some aeon ago. Looked quite engaging from what I sat through of it. I only saw it that one day and had long forgotten the name. I'll pick up this game once I go on another RPG spree.

You know what the neat thing is about the first trip to Zeal? There's virtually no combat when you first get there and yet CT has been first and foremost pretty much about combat and the cool tech combinations the entire time prior and yet Zeal is still so compelling.

Zeal doesn't just contrast with the future, it really really sticks out in a lot of ways -- in the best ways.

I only tried to play the older titles but they just seemed too slow to be interesting. Was I just not giving it proper go of it or is the 64 one way better?

Not gonna write up a review on my tablet in the early hours, how about you tell me why you think it's not, and I'll try to argue against that?

Returned to the roots of the series and improves on it in every single way. They took time to refine the series and perfected it.

n64 one is quite a bit better, but is only marginally faster paced. I suggest emulating it and running it at 25% or so faster.

Well I can try.

While I don't think it has the weakest plot in the series, it's certainly not one of the best. It starts rapidly declining after disc 1 in fact. Some people complain about the individual characters themselves, I think that's not necessarily a fair criticism as opposed to a difference in preference, but the plot itself is just meh.

The combat system can be made inconsequential by disc 1 robbing the game of any challenge. I mean, sure, in a game like FF9 you can purposely stay at level 1 and give yourself a challenge, that's the mark of good design, but it's actually to your advantage to stay as low leveled as possible in FF8. I'm not saying the idea is bad btw, but certainly the execution.

I think the highlights of the game are improved graphics from 7, Tetra Master, and the soundtrack is pretty good.

I don't think FF8 is a bad game, I just don't think it's a "10."

Is this what we're reduced to? Reliving golden moments with other canons, comparing games that shaped our childhoods, pouring over the memories, remembering how good life could be, fuck me put cowboy bebop soundtrack on and the nostalgia is damn near enough to put a tear in my eye. Damn. Well. I may as well contribute. Thanks for the memories
