Played through ~50-70% of the game and then just kept doing PvP casually for some hours because there was nothing interesting in the PvE/exploration/progression/gameplay.

No, games used to be better. Because the graphics were worse, they had to rely on great gameplay. Games nowadays are basically glorified slideshows mixed with some interactive cutscenes. Children today don't know what great gameplay is, and simply drool over the admittedly good looking graphics.

Level design is boring, most of the areas are either meh or awful, most enemies look like turd, 90% of bosses are forgetable.
Level design in 3 is slightly better and artistic direction was way better than 2 and is has a good gameplay which 2 lacks.
2 was just a mistake. 3 is trying to pickup the pieces and try to give somewhat of a good image to the series before letting it die.
Although the real solution would have been not to do other Dark Souls than 1 and focus on new IP since this is where FS shines.

Actually it is very good level design. I am playing it right now, and I have to say, I did not feel like exploring in 3.Everything was so linear. Ds2 provides new content and a world that was designed to explore. There are so many places and secrets to find. I have been surprised so many times by secret passages linking two areas together. That to me is good level design. I get why people shit on it. That's fine. But its not a bad game. It still is dark souls at it's core. It does do some things better than even one did. I'm also referring to the re-release and not the original. The differences between 1 and 2 are jarring, but that doesn't mean its bad. Anyone who shits on it usually likes the same thing over again. I myself, like the change. And PvP is fucking perfect in 2.

That's just a wild assertion that has no value, trying to discredit those who disagree with you. I don´t like things over and over again, I was annoyed that DS3 re-used Andre, Catarina Knight and stuff like that because I would have much preferred new content and characters.
But at least DS3 has a good atmosphere where DS2 just feel empty and void of substance.
DS3 was far from perfect, but better than 2, as I said I would've prefered FS stopping at DS1 and just bringing new IP, I enjoyed Bloodborne more than DS3, now I am trying Nioh (I know, not FS game) where I both enjoy the inspiration from DS and the many different mechanics they introduced, but also because it has a good and consistent atmosphere and enjoyable levels.

Also as a side note, I just like Dark Souls in general, so 2 is not excluded in any way by me. 2 was the first one I played. I even preordered it. I was too pussy for those games at the time. I got into Blood borne, and loved it so much I finished every trophy. I decided to finally tackle all of these games as a way of overcoming being a wimp. Haha. I really like how the games I used to hate the most became my favorite games to play.

No idea why, but those old Nintendo and PS1-2 games had great controls. Tony Hawk 3 and 4 have the slickest controls of any game I've ever played, hands down.
Anything Kixeye.com is cancer stay away from it. The players are cool, but after a couple of months you realize you're playing a broken flash based game (flash ends 2020)... and kixeye is a fricking joke of a company. All about getting you to spend money and never repair all the broken crap.

So far I don't regret buying it.
It's probably not the most amazing graphics you could get on PC and there is no mouse support (I don't really care about that but I think it is worth mentioning).
Only thing that annoyed me was that the game actually takes *75Gb* of disc space.
Other than that no technical issues, gameplay is fun, challenging and I feel it has a good learning curve (I have not mastered much yet so I can´t say for sure).
Looks like you can have good build variety but I'd need to start a new game to confirm.
From what I have experienced so far you can tackle the different level in different ways (i.e. path you want to take).
So far I like the atmosphere of the game, not as much as DS1's, but still an enjoyable one.
So yeah, if you don't mind not having ultra graphics, no mouse support and 75Gb of disc space taken by a single game it is definitely worth the price.
