I still remember the tears welling in my eyes at my great grandfathers funeral. The twenty one gun salute and the moment they draped the American flag over his coffin. I will never forget that image. We all lost something that day. Up to the final years of his life he would have everyone in the family come to his house that he worked for until the age of 83 and his death later in the year. He would make dinner almost single handedly (with the help of his daughters when they were in town) and I had quite a few fantastic evenings with him and the whole family. I have a very large family (as I said he had nine children) and no less than 25 of us would show up for dinner every week. The real downhill turn was when his wife (My great grandmother) passed on.

Well she died in the hospital at the age of 79 I believe. I was only eight years old but I was still perceptive enough to notice that i was the only one in the waiting room not crying. When the physician finally entered the room we all knew what he was going to say as much as we didn't want to hear it. "We did everything we could but, im sorry." That was the one, and only time in my great grandfathers life that I witnessed tears roll down his cheeks. The next few years were quiet foe him. He continued to be there for his grandkids and his children. But something was always missing. It was like he was empty behind his eyes. We would come to his house to say hello and spend time with him and he would be watching daytime television with no discernible emotion on his face, save for the smile he carried with him everywhere he went. Up until this point it was infectious. But now the same smile we all loved gave us cause for concern. It was almost smug. Like he knew something we didn't..

I now know why my grandfather carried that smile everywhere. In his later years on the precipice of his death, he had developed a large tumor on his neck. Many of his daughters had mentioned it but being a stern, depression era man he did not seek medical treatment for it. Or so I thought. It was at the age of 83 my great grandfather and the moral pillar of our family was diagnosed with cancer. Terminal at his age. It was his liver and many of my family were astounded. Not least of all his children. They couldn't bear the idea of a life without their wonderful father and many of the younger generation such as myself and my father couldn't stomache the thought either. He was on his last legs. Hospice was making him comfortable for his passing. He was so high he couldn't walk at all. I remember my grandmother grabbing his arm, holding him up and shouting "walk dad. Please just walk" as he smiled and made futile motions in his upper body. My great grandfather died later that year surrounded by loved ones, but with a smile on his face.. and only now do I know why. It's because he knew, that he was on his way to see his wife again. And that is why through the war, the cancer and family problems that the smile never left his face.
