I turn 50 in less than a month.
Growing up you are forced to be with the same people every year because of school. You don't *have* to talk to toxic people in your group, but most kids out of habit don't know they can ignore bad people. On the same note, try to keep the friends you do make in school, forgive them if they fuck up and keep in touch. These are the people you can trust. As an adult making friends is a lot harder, and the people you do meet tend to either want money, access or sex from you.
The workplace is like a tribe. You need to fit in to make it, dress and act like others there, and don't be a sperg. This is really hard for young people to get, they are taught to be unique but this is death in the workplace. You work in a tattoo shop? Don't show up in a suit and tie. You work in corporate America? Don't show up in a wife-beater and ripped jeans. Seems common sense but a lot of younger folks don't get it.
Along with that, dress well in clothes that fit, even if you're out of shape. Wear good shoes, and bathe and wear clean clothes. Don't go cheap on things between you and the ground, like shoes, mattresses, or car tires.
Start a 401k now. It is basically a savings account with a 30% bonus on every dollar (because it is not taxed). Count your money every week, go over your checking account, people will try to steal your money in fraudulent charges (like subscriptions you did not sign up for or modem rental from Comcast when you own one, to identity theft). When getting a job negotiate your salary, vacation time and benefits. Don't take the first offer.
Have as much sex as you can, fuck even the ugly ones. Have fun when you're younger, do stupid shit and make mistakes. Go on adventures. This is the stuff that gives you a personality and are the times you will never forget. If you close yourself off and surround yourself with other losers you will never grow as a person and when you are older people can smell it on you.
