American news is a lot worse than abroad in that it's extremely biased to the point that everything being put out on major television channels and the internet is pretty much an opinion piece.
The newspapers used to be a lot better at keeping that from happening, but that's no longer the case and a lot of papers have simply closed shop due to lower quality reporting which led to less people buying them. The internet and smartphones also played a big role obviously.
Many Americans simply don't have the time to sift through all of that bullshit or they don't care to because they've been so convinced by whichever of the two sides' opinion pieces they have chosen. Being the entertainment capitol of the world also played a part I suspect.
