The character progression and ideas behind the main characters obiwan (from padawan to the wise master in a new hope) and anakin (from a random dude with ideal views of the universe to the monster vader) was quite good, but their execution was lacking. Also the introduction of quigon as a middle character between light and dark, while leaning more to the light was also quite nicely implemented. The trilogy would probably have been better if he stuck around longer.
All in all it could have been really cool if they focused less on the pew pew and more on the establishing characters (especially villains like dooku and grievous),also the romance between ani and padme would probably not have felt as forced.

Other big thing is that Lucas is not "an actor's director", he is a writer first and foremost.
Stories abound from the actors in all of the SW films he directed that he didn't do multiple takes for best performance as long as they got the dialogue correct. The prequels were not the best films, objectively. It's clear that Lucas didn't have a whole lot of restrictions, which is one of the reasons that made the Originals so good. There are alot of thematics and imagery that sadly fall flat due to the lackluster executions that seem to want to say one thing but don't fully commit. It's a no-brainer that they can be bad at parts, but I still liked them and remember watching them fondly. You have to give the prequels credit where it's due for the originality and creativity that wasn't present in the Force Awakens. At least in the prequels they tried something new.

As for the rest of it: Lucas showed up with like 12 whole dollars and made something that at the very least you're still talking about almost 40 years later. The only real actors in the movie were Guiness and Cushing. Hamill was a theater player, Ford was set runner, and Fisher was on coke.
The story and idea was so new and simple that it didn't matter if you has a cheesy line, or that luke is annoying till the third act.

Also, what part of "the force was with them" do you not understand? Rogue one really highlighted this concept with Baze/chirrut. Chirrut was a fucking blind man, and he would've died had the will force not been with him. When Baze dies it shows that for him to live wasn't im the force's plan. The whole reason our heroes, in every movie, stay alive isn't by coincidence, the force was with them.

In 90+% of cases, unless it the book was specifically written to be easily translated into a movie, shit has to be simplified to make things work in the context of a single movie.
The rough equivalent of book length to movie time is 1 minute of movie time per page, so your average 350-page book would take 6 hours to really do justice to it in movie form.

Plus Larry Niven, like many Sci-Fi authors, has done countless short stories that could easily be made into movies.
That isn't even the problem though. Not matter how long the book is it seems they always boil the plots down so dumb fucks can understand it, and I am not trying to exaggerate or sound smart. When Inception came out I heard so many people say "it is confusing and hard to follow." God forbid you use that fucking brain in your skull!
Star Wars was originally a neat little homage to old movie serials -Flash Gordon in particular. They even ripped off the style of the summary that would scroll down at the start of a chapter of a Flash Gordon chapter.
Given that most fans of movie serials often missed chapters, Star Wars was created as a chapter of a much larger saga that didn't exist - as a nod to those fans that "came in during the middle". No greater saga was actually ever conceived beyond this chapter. In all a neat little homage.
No one expected it to perform so well or sell so much merchandise. Lucas was pressured, by the studio and the potential profit to be gained, into continuing a saga that didn't really exist. From this an ever shittier series of films were made. Each attempting to capture the magic of Star Wars but failing miserably. Each pretty much a showcase for a never ending parade of toys to be purchased and legos to be built.
What was once a neat little homage became the biggest cash grab in the history of cinema.

I just hate that the American film industry is going down the path of boring, thoughtless, easy to consume movies. There are a few decent ones every now and again, but go to the cinema right this moment and you will see a majority of shit for options.

Watch Star Wars and listen to what Ben Kenobi says to Luke. No of this fits into anything that comes in any of the films that comes after- unless Ben Kenobi is a liar who manipulates an innocent naive farm boy into carrying out a vendetta against Vader (who isn't Luke's father in the 1st one)
Empire retconns Star Wars in such a way that in order for it to work Ben Kenobi is converted from a wise mentor fighting an evil empire to a manipulative sack of shit with a hard-on for revenge.
