there is nothing comfy about the pnw. the only thing nice things about it are the mild summers, evergreens, and mountains.
2/3 of the year is grey. constant soul crushing grey. most of those are rain days but not proper rain like you get anywhere else. it just mists and daintily sprinkles all day. which doesn't sound bad but it's constant and there is usually a light breeze accompanying it being just cold enough to be bitterly miserable from fall to spring. description can't really do it justice but being outdoors in dry sub-freezing temperatures is drastically more comfortable. algae-like shit can and will grow on almost everything.
you can wear a jacket or hoodie most of the year i guess. i spend a lot of time outdoors year round but i pity the people who have to work in it every day and loathe the people who complain about the summers because they just want their hoodie back.

That all sounds fantastically comfortable. I lived in SoCal and got sick of sunny days. Same shit without change for months gets old fast. I also hate anything over 78 F and live where it snows often but have never owned a coat. I love cool gloom I guess.

Halfway decent rain gear solves all of that. I split my time between Portland OR and the Olympic Peninsula. So yeah, I'd be miserable without my rain gear. Nah you literally have to try to start a fire with a Kotatsu. It's just a low wattage electric bar heater on the underneath of a coffee table with a blanket you throw in between the frame and the table top. Most Japanese use heated floor mats instead now because it's safer in case you fall asleep or pass out drunk under one.
Japan isn't "that" cold in winter (unless you live up north or in the mountains) but winter is windy as fuck and their houses have no insulation or heating and often no air con. Kotatsu's are comfy as fuck. Just order one off of Rakuten or something maybe.

Lived in Bend for 2 years, about to move back in a couple weeks actually.
It is a real nice place. Particularly comfy in the winter months. Only things I don't like about it were the hipsters and the homeless people everywhere.
