In America you have a limited amount of options for health insurance. Most of those insurance carriers have 'networks' that limit the doctors that you can see. If you want to see a different doctor, you have to pay out of pocket (in addition to your insurance premiums). Many plans are "high deductible" and don't even start paying for your treatment until you have already paid out of pocket $2,000-$3,000.
Oh and most health insurance is through your employer, so the insurance company takes your money before you even see your pay check.
Really the only significant difference in the systems is that there is a middleman of an insurance company in the process jacking up fees and taking a cut of profit.

Thats bullshit, I've lived in Canada all my life and I've significant medical needs meaning I've been in the hospital quite a bit, and seen a lot of doctors. I've found all my doctors are pretty responsive. In some circumstances i've contacted my specialists and have had them see me the next day. Sometimes it depends on what the issue is. Whenever I make an appointment to see a doctor, I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 6 months, and that was for something that wasn't very urgent. Usually I find I can get an appointment pretty quick.
