can anyone suggest death metal (and/or technical death metal) bands that are heavy, but not too violent in their lyrical content? Have been listening to Gojira and Mastodon, trying to get into Meshuggah, but also trying to get into death metal more broadly
I've listened to Symbolic by Death (pic related) due to recommendation of Fantano, and I liked that, but I've seen Cannibal Corpse recommended and they seem a bit over the top -- I want to get angry, but not quite "raping people with knives" angry

Need more bands similar to Opeth. Found out about them in 2008 and that is the only band I have been listening to since.. Halp! FYI I like their earlier stuff like Orchid and Morningrise but Ghost Reveries is also quite amazing

Disagree. Metallica did a great job of bringing metal out of glam 80s shit and giving it some credibility. They weren't the first, of course, but they were the first to open it up to mainstream.
I hate how they changed their style, especially after Cliff Burton died - although I did _kindof_ like Death Magnetic. Maybe that was just because I had tuned them out for so long and that was the first record I gave a chance to in years. Dunno. In retrospect there was so much more metal in the mid-late 80s that was better.
