The misunderstanding in this argument seems to be on my end, in that you'received arguing for beliefs as a concept and not the validity of your beliefs in particular. My argument is that the value of your specific beliefs isn't great enough to endanger your social wellbeing, because your happiness is more important than your ideals, no?
I fully respect a person's right to believe that 9/11 was committed by Jews and George Bush, but going on a crusade to try and pursuade others of that belief can have long-lasting repercussions on a person's life. They're better off keeping that controversial belief to themselves to avoid conflict.
