In English there are 2 distinct futures. The one you used is where you are unsure of the event you are predicting. "I will be on time" in a grammatical sense implies that you are not confident in that actually being the case.
You'd say "I am going to be on time." to say that you will be on time since it is a more resolute expression.
In British English that's the case at least.
