Sounds like there are issues. Professional help should be sought if it all possible, talking therapist. There may be free options available for one or several sessions depending on state, insurance, ect. Go to the therapist together.

I wouldn't say I'm emotionally numb (I was for a bit after my dad died), but I've pretty much accepted that if she wants to die she eventually will succeed. Getting worked up usually helps to talk her down, but the "don't kill yourself for my sake" I don't think is as strong or permanent solution as talking to her calmly as an equal.

You can't just be her boyfriend, you'll have to also be her sugar-daddy and her therapist; and you'll have to provide a safe and stable environment for her to unlearn whatever crazy shit her family put into her head. Just remember that she's at a point in her life when a concept like love is the most serious life-or-death thing ever; she has enough teenage hormones to be seriously emotionally affected by the things you say or do, whether they are good or bad. But she's also intellectually mature enough to at least start to understand concepts like loyalty and commitment in ways that go beyond a Disney movie romance. The 18 - 23 age range is both the best and the worst of a young woman's love life, and whatever you do with/to her will affect her for the rest of her life. She might even consider this the first real relationship of her adult life.
Be honest with yourself. If you have any doubts that you can make the kind of commitment that she psychologically needs, then do her a favor and back away.
