If your state has a "castle" law you have the right to defend your property and can shoot any uninvited person in your home. If you don't live in a "castle" state you can only defend yourself or your family when you felt your/their life would be threatened. rule of thumb: make sure the person is in your house/the body falls into the house when you shoot them.
