Everything had to be extremely precise or they would take the scroll and have to start again. This never changed. The dead sea scrolls are ancient and there is only one book not in the collection. Which is pretty ironic, given that both East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath, books Steinbeck is famous for, are quite big yet are narrowly focused without a ton to say.
