The "shooting" (whether it was real or staged) helped push the "guns are bad no matter what" mentality.
One mass shooting isn't going to result in a countrywide ban of firearms. But several of them can get the ball rolling for states (and the feds) to pass legislation to severely restrict and ultimately ban certain types of firearms.
That's what it'll take to get rid of the 2A in this country. Just keep chipping away and narrowing the list of approved firearms. Also make it a pain in the ass to get ammunition.
