I know what you mean though. Good relative to other fast food. I used to think Wendy's was better like that too. Last few times I've eaten there it was pretty shitty. They've changed something about their food, and it's very noticeable.
It could have to do with individual stores though. At least somewhat. I used to work at a Subway back in high school and college. We were the busiest one in the area, and people would actually drive out of their way, past other Subways, to eat there. They were always talking about how we prepared the same food, better somehow, and we were much friendlier as well.
Also, I always preferred Burger King as far as hamburgers went, and I never understood their reputation for sucking. Theirs were about as close as fast-food gets to a home grilled one, and they at least somewhat resembled the ones you see in their ads. McDonald's on the other hand tastes like either stale bread and wilted lettuce, or stale bread and ketchup, to me--can't really taste the meat at all usually. About a year ago the local Burger King closed for a couple months to remodel. When it re-opened it was a completely new manager and staff. It's tasted pretty bland ever since.
