People don't realize that when you play and sing lead, it takes most of what you can do guitar-wise away from you as you really need to look at your guitar when you are playing fast and jumping frets.
People who don't actually play don't realize how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time. There is no fair comparison with a mere "guitarist" to anybody who is the lead for a band who happens to play guitar. That is precisely why there are so few of them out there, because they tend to be the most musically talented people.
I don't like Dave Mustaine at all, but he is one HELL of a guitarist and wicked talented. I've seen probably over 500 concerts, lost count a long time ago, and am in the biz, and can tell you that when he is sober, the very best musicians will beg, borrow, and steal to get a session with him. He has definitely invented a lot of chords and dramatically changed how a guitar is played.

The question "who is the best guitarist" always turns into a shitshow (whether on an internet forum, in a magazine, or anywhere else) because most people don't know shit about music, and even amongst people who do, most of them probably don't have a broad enough taste in music to know what they're talking about.
The best guitarist is almost undoubtedly either some prog/death metal, classical, jazz fusion, or flamenco guitarist.
Other genres of music are just too simple in comparison. That doesn't mean they're bad - in fact I love hardcore (punk not that fake scene kid shit), which tends to be pretty instrumentally simple, but it sounds good.
