The purpose of the electoral college is exactly what everyone is bitching it is, a way to make sure states like California and New York don't control the whole country.
And I'm sure the reasoning behind it is because the cultural and economic aspects of each state vary widely.
For instance, what do you think would happen to the infrastructure of a country that runs primarily on farming, and if we had a majority of states that were farmers. But since the majority of the population live in the city and have no experience with such things, thanks to being the majority of the populous they decided to enact a law fucking over farmers in favor of their own interests.
