I hear so much "what do I do" and yet see so little actual effort being put forth by people who want to learn. This is not going to be easy. This is not going to be simple. You will not get it at first. Manual labor will seem easy in comparison. You have to not just want this, you need to yearn for it. It is also a path you never stop learning. Read articles from KrebsOnSecurity. Read Packetstorm and Darknet.org.uk RSS feeds. Google terms you don't understand. Immerse yourself in this world.
I am generally against traditional postsecondary educational institutions. They're needlessly expensive, they force you learn massive heaps of useless irrelevant information, and they teach you such a tiny fraction of what you actually need to know. No college degree will teach you even 1/4 of what I know. A comp sci degree is helpful for getting past HR filters, not much more. Sec+ and CEH will also do that, albeit for thousands cheaper. Note: neither of those will teach you much more than traditional college courses (looking at you, >>712005379).
Certs CAN teach you things, but you need to go after the right ones. My #1 recommended cert for learning and growing is OSCP. It's hard, expensive, forces hands-on learning, and you -will- fail your first try. OSCE, GPEN, GXPN are also nice.

You just said exactly what it is you need: proactice countermeasures. The specifics are going to correlate with the architecture of what you're defending. It wouldn't make much sense to add protection from SQL attacks to a web app that has no central database being queried.
Thus without knowing the specific architecture of the system you're tasked to defend, my best advice is to give the OWASP top ten a look. A lot of the example code is in PHP, but the fixes for those big, common vulnerabilities can easily be implemented in another language provided you're familiar with both syntaxes.
As a developer, you're already going one step ahead of what you're expected to do by developing with security in mind. A lot of the time, devs write off security in the name of delivery time and application performance. Know that those of us tasked with defending really appreciate the work of the developers who have security on their mind, whether you cover every base or not.
