Well most big companies especially in the current market, will mainly hire people with degrees from University / College and without it they'll just ignore your application. It's pretty much the same circle as college. The first few years are awesome, then the company makes you buckle down and work down to the bone until you can't take it anymore. Then you move companies, rinse-lather-repeat, only with more pay.
It's not so bad once you find a decent company and you're comfy. Contractors generally don't suffer this fate, but finding work is about as predictable as famine in ancient Rome.

Depends on the phase of development we are in. I'm in RnD so my time is 50% desk work 50% lab work. We do have a medical office that we interface with. At the last company I worked at I was regularly working with doctors. Since it's a medical device, I've worked with human tissue (brain, skin, bone, muscle, liver, etc.) and blood (infectious and normal) so it's considered a bio hazardous environment.

the house was built in 1952, The city plans say I have forced air lol. We've been here for 22 years and it's never been replaced, Burners included. We've had to fix some parts, yeah, and it leaks. But that little stuff can be fixed. Just had to replace the thermocouple right before the transformer finally went. 12$ for the couple and 34$ for the transformer- probably save a few hundred doing it myself..

Very true. Defense pays better but that is very much a boom and bust market same with semiconductors.
The biotech market isn't as profitable but much steadier. Massive layoffs aren't as common as medical devices are needed the world over. The new emerging markets such as India and China are putting a new demand on med tech as that demographic is just starting to be able to afford proper health care.

true, before, the wiring was setup in a way that the basement had to reach it's temp to light. Before the main floor Zone Valve would open up. Now the Basement is on its own Zone, with the option of firing up the burner if its needed, by using 2 thermostats downstairs.
I'm not gonna lie, being an alarm tech - this did take a while to figure out, 4 years ago I had to figure out the plumbing. I had to replace the Airtrol valve, due to no pressure or water at all in the system >.<

I work for a company with ~4k employees. I work in the quality control group.
I actually just left a General Dynamics company that I'd been working at for the past four years. My salary there was $71k a year, so this was quite a jump salary wise. Some benefits lost going the contractor route but I more than made up for it with my increased pay.

My bonus is based on hitting my performance objectives (hiring, developing staff, etc) plus a percentage of the spend from the accounts I influence. I only get involved in the strategic opportunities.
The $200k is my base, no real way of predicting what my bonus might be from one year to the next.

I couldn't think of a better job. I work the hours that I ask to work during the week, take my weekends completely off, I consider myself as a businessman who runs two clinics and looking into the third, I have no "real" medical emergencies that would stress me out, my fiance is beautiful, and I am probably going to retire into a very comfortable life in 35 years with enough money to put my grandkids through college.
I have been a dentist for 2 years and I make 300K. By the time I am 40, I should be making close to 500-600K just from dentistry alone, without my upcoming investments in the local real estate market.
In other words, no it doesn't suck. I love this job, and would recommend it to my children.
