You bring up 'trial and error' again, which of course of a very basic tool to reach a goal, but I fail to see how it's connected to accepting 'because it's the easiest way' as a legitimate argument.
With trial and error you attempt to reach a certain goal or conclusion. You go on until you are there, and have therefore found one way. It does by no means need to be an easy way, nor the only one, and even if you found a multitude of possibilities, there is no saying that the easiest of the bunch would be the best one.

Listening to a discography by release order can be pretty interesting as it gives you a better notion of their progression, but I personally prefer hopping from albums to albums according to their concept and how much they attract me.
