Recently had a vote in maine, the state I live in, to raise min wage and cut out the employer tipped credit. It passed. Can't remember what the final min wage is suppose to be but its eventually going to go up in steps to like $15 or something. Without employer tipped credit, servers/bartenders/any other person that relies on tips is doomed.
Back when I served I was making almost $25 an hour. Even more when I was a bartender. Yes, their were people that did not tip or tipped poorly, but this was vastly outweighed by the people that tipped the standard or more. Maine is already one of the highest cost of living states around, and it's almost entirely built on a vacation service industry. All these people that are service workers are in for a terrible surprise when people stop tipping, and they have to work sections based on 10 or more tables instead of the cushy 3 to 4 they get now. Menu prices will skyrocket at any of the restaurants that can actually afford to stay in business, while mom and pop places, green/local grown, and start ups will utterly fall flat on their faces as they have to pay staff way more than their labor budgets can handle.
The consumer will be hurt deeply by this too. Not only will prices go up to reflect this change, but the quality of service will drop drastically too, both in front of the house and in back of the house, especially at chains or corporate places, whom are already notoriously bad for under staffing, under paying, and over charging on prefabricated food. Yes, tipping is a strange and arbitrary system, but it works to the benefit of the customer way more than most people understand.

I can't say much for being a waiter, but I am a chef (American). Working food service (regardless of what position) shouldn't be looked down on.
