I think you're confusing rate of relapse. Yes, rate of relapse is very high. But keep in mind that if you report trying to quit on your own and fail, that incident makes it into the statistics.
With treatment, a slow methadone taper, suboxone, the shot you can get... prospects are good. But again, it comes down to really *wanting* to quit.
I went on methadone, dropped from 60 mg to 8 mg over the course of 2 years, and slipped off of it easily. No cravings, no physical symptoms of any kind, no more dealers numbers in my phone....I'm done.

ever hear of the "rat city" experiments? Kind of confirms exactly what your saying. The theory is that animals become addicted to substances in order to cope with their shitty lives in cages and being zapped etc... Rats placed in an environment with more space, toys, and a chance to socialize weren't interested in developing an addiction unlike the 'mistreated' group.
Was addicted to oxys myself, started using kratom to wean off oxy and never looked back.
A lot of people don't realize that not only does kratom remove withdrawals during the detox, it actually can somehow change how your doc affects you in the future.
For instance, I had a habit of 70 to 90 mg oxy a day about three years ago, tapered down with kratom. Hadn't touched oxy since but continued using kratom maybe twice a week or so for pain relief and mood improvement.
But About a month ago, I took 45 mg of oxy for shits and giggles and it did not have the same level of enjoyment at all. It didn't have the same appeal at all. It did not fill any void anymore.
Seriously if anyone is truly interested in quitting opiates and staying off opiates, try kratom.

I will implore you to look up the research that has been done. A number of European countries and I believe Australia has set up small clinics where an addict can go, receive a carefully measured dose of heroin, and inject it safely. It doesn't get them "high." It takes away the cravings and the physical withdrawal.

An addict spends most of his time wheeling and dealing for money, scoring drugs in sketch neighborhoods, and then when you consider an addict's reusing or sharing needles and shit... there you have most of your problems right there.
