The electoral college is made up of representatives that act as their state's votes. Every state gets at least two with more if that state has a higher population. Trump won because, while more raw people wanted Hillary to win, Trump won more electoral votes than Hillary did. This style of voting helps make sure smaller states actually have an opinion when compared to giant states (take Massachusetts and California for example). It's a bit dated of a systems, since now we can just ducking tally them all electronically and every election I hear someone whine a little about it. But the Electoral College often just goes for the popular vote for their state, so it not that bad.

Let's say party A gets 51 out of 100 votes and gets a MP
Party A does this in four districts and gets 4 MPs. The total vote for party A is 204 out of 400 votes.
Let's say party B BLOWS party A out of the fucking water in three other districts. Party B gets 90/100 votes in those three districts. They get three MPs.
In total, out of seven districts Party A gets 234 total votes out of 700 possible. Party B gets 466 out of a total of 700.
But party A STILL gets 4 MPs and is the majority party so they get the Prime Minister and can wave their fat legislative cocks all over the place.
That's how American presidential elections work sort of. So someone could get more votes, but lose enough states electoral votes to not be president.

The United States is a Republic first, and not a democracy first. There are things that are voted on that are true for a traditional democracy, but President isn't one of them.
When we vote for President, what we are really doing is voting for an elector to go forward to the Electoral College and vote for President for our community.
There's a long reason why this is, but the short of it is that the major framer of the Consitution was Madison, and he coined "The Tyranny of the Majority". He set up the electoral college so that the majority, the popular vote, would not allow the majority of the population to run rough over the minority.
So, how is the electoral college set up? In the United States, we have two houses of congress--the House of a representatives and the Senate. The house is population based. High population states have more Representatives than low population states (435 in total, proportional to each state by population). The Senate gives each state two senators, so that every state has an equal say (100 in total). It is not population based.
The electoral college is exactly the same size as our two houses of congress. Each state has electors based on population, and each state gets an extra two electors on top of that. Because of this, small states with low population have a slightly larger say in who becomes President than large population states. This is why swing states that votes for President changes between the two parties each election is so important--one small state can tip the balance of the electoral college to one candidate or another. If all the low population swing states go to one party over another, you will see what we saw here: a popular vote that went to one candidate, but an electoral college that goes to the other candidate.

Absentee votes are discarded during counting when it becomes clear that they won't affect the outcome. Most absentee votes are from the military. Most of the military (based on polls) is in support of the Republican party.
That slim margin could (and likely would) swing in favour of Trump if those votes were counted... which many of them simply haven't been as the states from where they originated had already been decided without them.
