Yeah, XMonad allows floating windows, it is rather easy to write some Haskell code to automatically size and position a floating window though, the reason I have a key bind to open a terminal there, is because I often use it as a calculator.
Tiling is nice, helps a indecisive person like me stay organized. I use BSP (binary space partition) as the tiling algorithm of choice in XMonad.
