Each state is assigned a certain number of delegates based on population, not size. Otherwise Texas, California an NY would decide every election due to large population. Let's say hypothetically ny only needed 2 million votes to assign Hillary with all the delegate points but 5 million votes for her. Now a surplus of 3 million popular votes exist that wasn't needed. That mostly you're opinion though. I'm not saying its wrong, but there are counter arguments. It comes down to whether you value more whats good for the whole vs what good for the individual.
For example universal healthcare should focus on preventative care for these smokers and land whales, hopefully helping them quit or loose weight, but at least reducing the co-morbitities of their conditions.
This ultimately makes for a more productive American who can work for longer, and saves us in disability and end of life care costs.
As for education a large segment of the middle class is being priced out of higher education. Partially due to bad parental saving, partially due to location/cost of living differences as well. But these students currently do not get the subsidies of the poor, nor have wealthy parents who can send them to school.
By pricing these students out of higher education not only are we maintaining a wealth gap, but we are eliminating possible promising candidates from positions which may be of great benefit to our country/species as a whole down the road.

Popular votes is a logical system that works in many countries, but in America it poses a problem thanks to the sheer size and varying densities of our cities and states.
Without an electoral college, political candidates would primarily focus on the dense 'cluster' regions that include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and every other big city.

Education costs comes from supply and demand. The cultural importance of education increased throughout the 90's due to unrealistic propaganda. (also destroyed the trades) Pell Grant, GI Bill, Collegiate Sport Scholarships, etc... All increased demand, thus price increased and unfortunately acceptance became more based on ability to pay than apptitude in the subject matter. Some like art majors are useless, so who cares...But it behooves us as a people to have the best possible candidates in STEM, Medicine, Law, etc...
