The thing a lot of people, both in the US and outside it, don't get is that the US political system is based around the idea of checks and balances.
The problem is that there are too many checks and balances, to the point where it literally does not matter who gets elected, nothing major is ever going to change. All that will change is slight reallocation of the budget, or slight tweaks to taxes or the like, but never anything major because why would politicians want to vote themselves out of a job by voting on passing major changes to the system when they can just block major changes and keep their cushy jobs of doing fuck all and getting paid $400,000+ per year for doing nothing but sitting in a chamber for a few hours every few weeks.
