For me it usually goes like this:
iqdb for image aggregators (*booru etc.). if nothing or no credible source is found, use the saucenao (great for pixiv and some others) link on iqdb to directly link the search there.
if nothing is found, use the google link on iqdb. if nothing is found, it's getting really hard.
depending on your knowledge in source finding, you might want to try tag searching on sadpanda or something.
