So why dont we use trebuchets to launch stuff into space? like if we get a trebuchet and make it huge. like i mean big enough to send 100 kilos in to low earth orbit. with 9000 trebuchet launches we get one Iss. However we dont have to stop there. if we keep launching we can make the space station bigger and bigger with just the cost of the part and maintenance on trebuchet. Thoughts?

Hold on, you'll all calling OP retarded, but I can't actually see the structural problem with throwing tiny packages.
Just as a whip accelerates a tiny mass past the speed of sound without breaking, you could launch a tiny mass with a huge arm that gets thinner towards the end.

The atmosphere though, that's the problem.

Okay dipshit. Let's set aside this won't work because it's fucking stupid and we all know it.

If you're just flinging something into orbit it's not going to work because you need a burn to equalize your orbit once you've reached the highest altitude of the ballistic arc from your launch. No matter how hard you through your object it will come back down unless you have a burn once you're out of the atmosphere.

Now if you cop out and say that's acceptable. Because you would need only a small amount of fuel to equalize your orbit compared to a traditional launch. I would say eat a dick OP, you're still retarded.

To launch an object in this fashion you need to apply all your delta v at the moment of launch, and sea level or pretty close, where your payload is exposed to the most dense part of the atmosphere. Your payload would burn up from friction long before making it out of the atmosphere.

TL;DR
You're so fucking stupid I think your parents may have been twins.

>>710938481

dude you forgot that most of the arm will soon be in space anyway when launching.

There is no gravity in space, so only the beginning will cost some energy.

Which is actually pretty easy to solve because if you have such a huge Trebuchet you just make a huge bag for a basket, that will collect rain when it rains.
When it's full it will be havier then the arm which will auto-fling itself.

Nature will help out, shit doesn't even cost ya a fucking energy besides the threshold of building the Trebuchet!
>>
>>710934908

Atmosphere is always a problem if you go quickly, so a cheaper solution is go rise slowly, such as with a balloon. This can be used for light payloads, such as seen in the JPL testing for hypersonic parachutes. A balloon was used to lift it high enough that a single small motor could be used to bring the small craft into low Earth orbit.

Ever dropped a bag of water on the ground? The bag full of rain will empty when hitting the earth, if there is anything left in it, just drain/unplug the plug that you build in the bag.
without counterweight the arm will drop to the ground.

The problem is that the trebuchet's force is being used to circularize the orbit however the majority of fuel spent on rocket launches are used just to get some vertical speed. it only takes a small amount of Delta V to cirrculize. you're solving a different problem by using a trebuchet with an arm that extends beyond the atmosphere.

Just judging by this video of the world's most powerful trebuchet: liveleak /view?i=39b_1391748944
the average velocity of the projectile was 17.29 m/s.

Well, it's been theorized that a huge fuck off railgun would be a feasible way to get things into space. It would be a much larger initial investment than a rocket launch facility, though. It could easily pay for itself over its service life, but that could take decades.

I don't think a trebuchet is really viable, though...
>>
Idiot, your going to have to accelerate your projectile to around 11 km/s, and because that force cane only be applied when the object is touching the trebuchet, the G force will lilkly destroy the object, and kill any humans on board.

Furthermore you won't end up in a circular orbit, if you end up in any orbit at all

I've built a tiny one before. It's a sound concept.

Whether or not it can be scaled up to something that can launch a satellite into orbit is another matter. That's more an engineering problem, though, not a flaw in the concept.

to much fuel cost, just picture a giant stadium length arm, spinning at high rps, then on the apex swing you release a small package that gets launched under 50 g.
most of the cost in deep space travel is getting the spaceship parts and fuel out the atmosphere

We can use Earth's surface velocity in addition of the trebuchet. We just have to build a big stationary brick wall and time everything so that the trebuchet launches the package at the exact time it hits the wall.

Package speed = trebuchet speed * earth surface velocity

Almost genius. Problem is, to survive such an impact both trebuchet and wall would need to be made of diamond. No telling what the results of that would be. Plus, the idea of building a "stationary" wall in space could prove tricky.

The solution is simple. Launch a shuttle into space using traditional techniques, but attach one end of a very long pulley to it. When it gets up to space the astronauts can simply pull up any bits they need from earth.

The extra advantage here is when NASA wants the shuttle back they can just reel it in.

Science is just the new age religion invented by jews because catholics were getting all the sheckels. Think about it, in the beginning people didn't understand how shit worked so they claimed that "god" must've invented everything and that God was why things are the way they are. And people just believed this hook, line, and sinker because they didn't have a better explanation. Then as people got less fucking idiotic they started to actually physically see how things work via trial and error. So one day a group of people got together and were like "this god stuff is bullshit and the churches are taking all our money...what if WE pretend like WE know how things work and make up names for how it works and then people will be like 'Holy shit that makes sense' and WE can start taking their money to fund our 'research' muwahaha". And then people continued to figure out that things work a certain way (because of years and years of trial and error) and made up names for it and kept making up more "laws of ___" and discoveries and stuff and so science evolved and people kept funding it. And now everybody's all whole hog like "Yeah science is definitely how things work what are you an IDIOT or something" but if you think about it that's exactly how it was with Christianity way back when. If you questioned the fact that "god" made something the way it is then you were labelled a sinner and made to feel like an idiot WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU QUESTION SCIENCE TOO people just say you're a moron. You can claim that "molecules" interact in a certain way but have you ever seen it with your own eyes? You can claim evolution happened but have you ever actually seen the "fossils" that "prove" it. You can claim the world is "round" or that the "earth revolves around the sun" but do you actually have any physical proof? Science is just a new religion, man, so of course "scientists" don't want you to find cheaper ways to do things.

Sure, that's a completely reasonsble opinion. Go ahead and perform an experiment to disprove something you doubt. List your criteria, and present your findings to the community at large.

That's the beauty of science. If you don't believe it, test shit yourself. It's rather well documented.
