I grew up poor in Wyoming. Hunting is how my family survived for many years. I don't enjoy or participate in sport hunting, but for food I totally understand.
I went rabbit hunting with some family when I was 12 or so.
Little cute rabbit jumped out of a bush and I shot it.
It didn't die immediently, fell over and started breathing really hard for a few second and then it stopped.
Didn't taste good, didn't feel good, would not recommend.

A child can't process killing a large mammal. The hunters that I know are primarily Metis (French & feather Indian mix) because its easy for them to get licensed. Only a certain number get hunted each year. Hunting is more honest than grocery shopping in the meat department. You see how the animal lives and you see how the environment plays a role in their life cycle. Hunters make up the backbone of the non bullshit conservation groups like ducks unlimited. Oddly enough only the white hunters seem to care vocally about the environment as far as I can tell. Great people for the most part, but they aren't that different from any other group.
