I learned it a little different. Think of the strike angles like cutting a clock in half. 12 to 6, 1 to 7, 2 to 8, 3 to 9, so on and so forth. I also learned that training is mostly bullshit and seldom actually used, the only thing you can really take from it is basic shit along with discipline and the understanding that every fight is circumstantial and nothing works 100% of the time.

I started a fight with a bouncer after the bartender cut me off.

He had training of some sort, and was sober.
I did not, and I was stupid drunk.
I was the asshole in this situation, and he kicked my ass. I didn't need to go to the hospital, but my shoulder was sore for 2 weeks after.
